Tip(s) for Hung Up Toms

Ever had a Tom hang up on you? Most of us have, and if you havent, it' ll happen. Turkeys are notorius for hanging up; that is, they stand there and Gobble and Strut at you without ever coming into gun range. Most of the time there is some element that they arent willing to cross,go around, fly over, etc... This is because in nature the Hen is supposed to go to the Tom, that' s how it has always been. It' s easy for a Turkey to fly across a canyon, over a river or fence, but most of the time they just wont do it because the Hen is supposed to go to them.

Tip #1 - When Toms hang up, your first instinct is to call more. Try shutting up. Call softly a few times, then dont call for 10 minutes. Periodically scratch the leaves with your hands to simulate a feeding hen who is ignoring the Old Bird. But, watch closely because he may just slip in on you, a Hen ignoring him in HIS woods should drive him crazy.

Tip #2 - If the above didnt work back away 50-100 yards while calling, then silently sneak back to your original spot and repeat Tip #1. This also works well if you are with another Hunter. Sneak back 50-100 yards, find a nice place to sit, and start calling softly, the Tom should walk right by your buddy, giving him the chance for a shot!

Tip #3 - It' s been said over and over to NOT move while you' ve got a bird coming in. Try sneaking around the backside of the Tom. Because the Tom has already come from this direction he should have no trouble finding you, the " Hen" .

Hope these help! I know they arent much, but they have worked for me in the past season(s), just thought I would share! :D

Good advice...I especially agree with the technique of " shutting up." Silence has a tendancy of driving ' ol tom crazy!
