Who's trying to fill a FALL turkey tag?
Anyone out there trying to fill a fall turkey tag? Our fall turkey season (firearm) opens in 3 days - I can't wait to get out there and chase 'em! I scouted a new farm this morning, it looks really promising!!!
Got my camo laid out and my shotgun ready... At least I'll get 11 days under my belt to help me through the withdrawal until spring opener. LOL :) Most people I know are bow hunting for deer and if a turkey gets close enough, they'll nail it! Curious to see who else is fall hunting... Kim :) |
Kimmer , we were out today but as I see with the Low Population we now have and all the standing corn fields its not looking promissing :s10:

I'm hunting deer at this time TG but like you said if one comes by I have an arrow just for him or her. On my way out of my hunting spot I see a flock of them on this guys private property and he must not hunt or let anyone else hunt because they are in plain sight on a busy road almost everyday. I have heard them in the woods while in my stands and blinds but not seen them yet,but if I do I'll say hello with southern twang of the bowstring.

Got an 8 inch gobbler this spring & last week I had a chance for #2, but I let him walk. I was hunting deer & hog last week & as soon as the sun broke I saw a turkey on the ground about 50 yards away. I was still hunting anyway, so I slowly inched my way towards that turkey. Slipping between the palmettos I finally got to within about 40 feet of a small flock of birds. They were all hens except for 1 jake with about a 3 inch beard. Yes, he was legal, and I could have bragged about limiting out on turkeys this year, but to me the thrill was stalking to within 40 feet of him. I think standing there listening to them call softly back & forth will help me be a better caller next spring, and by then that beard should have grown a little. I seem to be getting pickier as the years go by - hope I'm not getting soft, LOL.

Last weekend! Had a hen fired up about 30 minutes ago, but she went silent. Of course she's behind me - I'm scratching in leaves every so often hoping to bring a few in. Spooked 2 nice deer out of the field when I walked in & took a great pic of a turkey track. (A.K.A. Eye Candy to me!!!). LOL. If I can figure out how to upload that pic from my phone I will.

This is my first time fall turkey huntin in my life been out 3 times and have had horrible luck. I live on a army base so its all public hunting land, and every spot that i have looked at turkeys has been filled with a bow hunter or something. So the past couple of times ive sat in the woods just hoping i could find one. But really im not sure what calls do and do not work in the fall lmao. Usually every day that ive been out ive seen a flock of them on the side of the road and both times ive got out the car and tried to get at em they take off into the wood line or woods and i lose them. I still got until the 12th to fill this tag so hopefully i can do it soon so i can focus on deer and duck hunting lol. Anyone got any tips for me to fill this tag?
|
JW - that's just SICK!!! LOL!!!!!
Dalton - it's hard chasing birds in the fall, adding on top of it public land and the odds really start stacking against you! I hope you fill that tag... keep us posted!!! Kim :) |
Dalton-I'd try the following:
1). The woodline where you see them go- I'd try and get in there when you see them from the side of the road, either pull forward & head in there or back up & try getting in the woods without being seen; there's a good chance that is where they are eventually headed anyway. Or, possibly pull up fast when you see them, blow the horn & try scattering them? They should be easy to call back in.(Provided this is legal in your state). 2). Try walking an area you think they may be roosting before it's light. There's a good chance you may scatter them from the roost, they'll likely wind up back at the place they started from once it gets light out. Kee-kees & hen yelps usually work best in the fall. |
Me. Went out yesterday...opening day. 7am to around 2pm. No sign of turkeys. Gotta find a better spot. Season ends on the 23rd.
|
Good Luck K Williams - hope you find them!!!
