Blind set-ups...
 

Just wondering how many of you fellow hunters have the patience to set-up blind.In otherwords you haven' t heard a thing all morning,so you move into an area that looks good or even maybe you' ve come across some sign,so you just set-up,wait,and call in your own style of calling??The reason I ask is cause experience has shown me that in alot of cases its much more effective to stay in one place than walk all over your stretch of turkey woods bumping quiet birds!!;)

Over the years, I haven' t been the best at the blind set-up patience game, but since this old body isn' t getting any younger every year, it seems to be getting easier to sit the turkeys out as each new season rolls around!:);)

The last two birds taken were both semi-blind setups, in that I knew there were birds in the area, but set up before working my calls/locating a roosted tom. In the one instance, we were set up on a virtual turkey highway (we' d taken 3 birds there already that season), and, after a 4 hour wait, my wife bagged her first. In the second, after I set up (cold) before dawn, in my Doghouse, in the rain, I heard a tom gobble on the roost nearby, and eventually called him (plus two jakes and a hen) in.

I prefer to roost a tom, either the night before or in the early dawn, but sometimes blind setups work, too, if you' re lucky.:D

Bo, your right.

In my guiding experience there are places I can say for sure my client will be successful if he/she has the patience to sit with me. Unfortunately, most want to " run and gun" just to hear the birds.

Most of the time I end up at the same area from a vantage point only to see birds strutting around where I suggested we sit and wait......what can you do?...;)

i am.....i killed my first and only turkey like that....i know they walk up and down this atv trail alot to feed strut and do turkey things....i THOUGHT they roosted on that hilside too....but they roosted arcoss the hollow on another hillside...i heard one gobble about 4 times WAY over there.....i figured that was useless and a heck of a hike and way to hard to hunt over there because of the terrain so i grabbed my gear and went down the trail blowing my crow call for over a mile......not one gobble......went back....about an hour passed or so since light......i decided to stick it out and wait.....i knew they used that trail alot.....there were fresh scratchings right there on the ground! so i set up and called like 2 feeding hens with 2 calls......about an hour later i heard a gobble not far away....i knew he was looking for me and he was good as mine if i could not get busted....grabbed my box call and gave him a few more yelps......he went absolutely nuts.....one of the loudest thunderous gobbles ive ever heard....i dropped the call and got the gun up..withing seconds he was looking down my gun barrel! in one of my pics i took on the trail you could see a fresh scratching from the day before....it was my first time ever hunting alone and i wasnt going home like a lost little boy without someone to guide me......i was staying there until noon....i got comfortable and had alot of iced tea to drink....i was prepared to sit there and was going to do it......i didnt want to embarass myself and go home and i walked over a mile and got no answer so i figured they have to use that trail sooner or later......and it worked perfectly....... i went home happy as could be and dad was more then excited to see i could actually do it on my own!!
