It's a bearded hen!
As stated earlier just check the breast feathers NO IF AND or Buts Black tips are Toms or Jakes, buff is Hen. Hens heads always look all blue or gray when you see them gobblers always have a brighter blue and or red heads, hens never have red or bright blue.
That said the breast feather will give you the definitive answer.
Either way you had a successful hunt!

Am I wrong about the egg thing???? I know of two seperate instances around here where this question came up, but in both cases upon pulling the guts from the birds eggs were found, and ya can't argue with that! I know in the pic it's hard to tell if its a spur or not but the guy said it did in fact have some very small nubs. To me the plumage thing seems hard to go by since we are just looking at a picture and slight variations in plumage could make it difficult. I ain't saying anybody is right or wrong here, I'm sure no expert in this area but this has got me very curious to find out in fact what it truely is.

I can see black tipped breast feathers in the photo..
Defintely a jake..The breast feathers never lie... Buff tipped/hen black tipped gobbler..
Hens sometimes have nubbin spurs....
Also, the legs are too long and the feet too big for a hen..

You can clearly see small spurs on each leg. He also wrote it has small nubs on each leg. They are not ground leaves. Like I said previously ITS A JAKE. A young eastern jake.
