Mossburg 500 Shot
I will be using a Mossburg 500 with a xx Mossburg full choke. I shot it for the first time last night at 20,30,40 yards and all the test shots would have killed a Tom with no problem. The shot is Winchester Supreme number 5 and it is a 3" shell which is the biggest it is able to fire. For 10.00 bucks at Walmart it does an OK job but I would like a little better performance and a few more bb's on the target out at 40 yards. Any suggestions from you who have a Mossburg 500 who have found a good load for this gun and type of choke would be appriciated.

Were you shooting your gun at a turkey target or were you all cought up in the "10in circle hype"???
|
Try # 6s, I like them better.
JMHO I don't know what happened, when I tried the quick reply it went to edit instead. My reply ended up in your thread, nothing on your thread changed. |

I use the HS Turkey targets, I was getting about 12 to 20 bb's in the neck/head area at 30 and 40 yards anda few below that. |
I shoot a 500, and I've killed them just fine out to 35 yds with Win 3" #5 and a standard full choke.
I bought #6 loads this year. The pellets are only 0.01" smaller in diameter, but you get 54 more pellets to the ounce of shot, so over 90 more pellets per shell in comparison to #5. |
I have had excellent patterns with a Indian Creek .660 shooting both Hevi-13 3" 2oz #7's and Hevi-13 3" 2oz #6's.
|
I believe that is a lead only choke? I would not shoot hevi shot with it.I shoot Hevi Shot mag blend with my 535 with great results. I have the TruGlo SSX choke and the Mag blend is # 5, 6, 7 shot.
Like others said switch to #6s and you will pick up some more pellets in your pattern. John |
I have the exact set up as you do. I use Federals 3in 2oz 5 and 6 shot. I prefer the 5 shot but the 6 shot is just as good. Just my opinion here Winchesters shells are junk. They spray all over the place. Im not afraid to shoot 50 yards using Federals. Try Federals and see the difference.

I feel the same way I bought a box winchester # 5s 3 out of the 10 didnt go off when I pulled the trigger and the ones that did patterned like crap now I shoot remingtons in my 11-87 and I shoot federals in my 870 I also use hevi shot but there hard to find where Iive |
Thanks for the input everyone,I think I'll give the Federal shells a test with the 5 and 6 mix. I think your right about the Winchester 3, 5 spraying all over the place. I would prefer being able to shoot out to 50 yards if I needed to,the Winchester shells don't work well in my gun choke set up very well past 30 or 40 max.

I have a mossberg 535 with the standard full choke and I wasn't that impressed by the winchester high velocity stuff. The federal flight controls in #4 are great in a 3.5" shell, but if you're going to be hunting with a 3" I would go with #6 shot. They still have plenty of energy at < 40 yards and they pattern much more densely.

#5's, don't shoot over 30 yards. I like them as close as I can get them, 5 or 10 ft.. I am almost deaf, and like to hear them spit, pur, and drum. Another reason for a close shot, is if something goes wrong, you can get another shoot!!!!!!!!

Check your PM. I sent you one.

I had a Mossberg 88 (basically a 500) and it liked the 3" Win Supreme 6's, but not the 5's. In fact, every gun I've ever shot turkey loads from didn't like 5's. I know there are less pellets, but it wasn't just density. The patterns were very inconsistent. The 6's did great.

Mr Longbeard . How do you get your pellets to fly in the exact same pattern every shot? I mean Mr. longbeard if you're all about the pretty picture of the turkey when patterning your gun it must be because those 12 pellets in the neck are going to be there on the next shot too right?:hail: 10 inch circle "hype" . lol. Hey I got a news flash for ya... To brag about hunting public land you also need to be the one finding the turkeys too CW |
I could not find the Federal brand anywhere in the area so I bought the Remington Nitro number 6 shot to see how it patterned and it works great in my Mossburg 500 with the xx choke. Thanks for all the insight into various options for this gun and choke,I'm looking forward to seeing how it works on a real bird this week.
