I went from a 28 inch Rem 870 to a 20 inch mossberg 835 and never looked back. With a jelly head or pure gold choke it throws a pretty good pattern with 3.5" 2.25 oz #6 hevi-13s. The gun is light and maneuverable. With a Sims recoil pad, I don't take a beating either.

I think 24" is the best of both worlds. Short enough that you won't snag it on branches but long enough to where you still get the positive pattering of a slightly longer barrel.

My Rem 870 has a 20" barrel with a Rem Xfull turkey choke shooting 3" Fed #5 or 6 Turkey loads. dual bead sights. It works great for me. If I shoot at the bird, It's going nite nite.

My brother decided to hunt with a 20 ga. 870 this year. 26 in. barrel with Nitro shells. He shot the Pure Gold choke and ended up trading it back in for a Jellyhead. The difference wasn't even close. The Jellyhead was WAY better. |
24. Its perfect, not too long, not too short.

Unless you've got a scope, a long barrel will be more accurate because of the longer sighting plane. |
