Ever lost a bird with #7 hevi shot???
just curious if anybody ever shot at a turkey at say 45-50 yards and had the bird just fly off???
|
I shot my limit last year using Hevi 13 blend #5,6,7 and they worked great! I have never used just a #7 for turkey hunting.
|
Had a good year last year and killed 3 with the Hevi 13 7's but none of em over 40 yds. I've shot a few turkeys in my 40 plus years of turkey hunting and I was impressed. The stuff hits " hard".
|
No, but I sure have had quite a few fall over dead.
|
I've never used 7's before, but have killed quite a few with 6's and some at long range. I've always been a little Leary of going that small. Last year I shot hevi 13 no 5's and they hit hard! No problem there if I need the range. Killed one at about 38 yards with them.
|
No sir. Been using straight 7's in my SP-10 now for 2 seasons. They all took a dirt nap. I'm very impressed with pattern density and sustained energy..even out to 50 yds.

I had one get away last year, but I won't blame it on the shell! It was the same morning that I had knocked the sight off my shotgun. It was a clean miss.
The ones that did catch the #7's didn't know what hit them. Remember, Hevi's have as much knockdown as lead shot 2 sizes larger. Would you be worried about taking a bird at 50 yards with a tight pattern of lead 5's??? rw |
the only reason a bird would fly off at that distance is if you missed him
|
public or private bird? Of course the public ones are tougher to knock down so it would depend.........
|
Oh, I know you just didn't.:happy0157: Of course we know public birds are much tougher than those sissy private ones. Those 7's will bounce right off of them.
|
I killed a bird on opening morning last year with 20 gauge 3" #7 hevi shot.
It was only 30 yards and I know your question is about longer ranges. This is the only experience I have with this load though. I plan to use it more often this year as the 20 single shot is really really light compared to my 12g nova. |
I bought another box of 3" #7's today...
rw |
I've been shooting 5's but you guys might have me talked into trying some 7's. My question is where do you guys get your combo loads of 5's and 7's?

When it comes to easy private land birds your Ont birds take it to a whole new level of easy!!! I heard theres only like 5 people in Ontario that hunt turkeys :happy0157: JA |
don't forget there in pens up here as well. That really helps too!
|
No just boxed birds shipped in by the NWTF...
Either way there private property birds... No comparison to a heavily hunted eastern!!! So quite kidding your self :confused0024: |
I once knocked a bird down with heavy shot and while standing over the bird giving high fives to my son the bird stood up and flew away. I watched him fly into a cow pasture and then run another 400 yards to the wood line. Looked all day and never found him.
The bird was flopping around at my feet and not able to lift his head and then... Bye Bye. I will never let that happen again. I always grab the bird by the neck and choke him until he gives up the ghost. OH by the watch those spurs, they hurt. |

Have always used #5's and 6's in my 870. Switched to Federal turkey loads by a chance encounter. We encouraged hunters in camp to use the Heavy Shot. One guy that switched, gave me two boxes of Federal. It patterned better for me than the Heavy Shot, so I have stuck with it.

BTW- did take one with that set up in Nebraska while hunting with Lilhunter at 73 yds across a draw. My rangefinder was in the blind from the morning set up and we were off running n gunning. If I had known it was that distance, I wouldn't have taken the shot. None the less, I was impressed that I got that range.

73 yards with #7 hevi shot... Ok so what your saying is I should be able to kill a bird at 70+ yards with lead #5's??? If you said 55-60 I might buy it, Might... But 73 yards... Oh boy |

If you said 55-60 I might buy it, Might... But 73 yards... Oh boy A lead #5 and Hevi shot #7's still have enough energy to kill a turkey at 70 yards. I have never seen anyone get a good pattern at 70 yards with lead #5, and few people getting a good pattern at that range with Hevi shot #7's. |

I think Mr Longbeard needs to spend more time practicing his aim than bashing Hevi-13 loads. |
50 yds is too far most shotguns unless you put a lot of 7's in his head and neck at that distance you should use magnum blend 5,6,7's they are deadly. An Ethical shot is the maximum killing range for your gun I dont like to shoot them over 40 yds.
