Hi, I'm just starting out hunting this year, I was wondering if any of you use a bow to harvest turkey. Being as there is a lot more movement with a bow than a gun, do you hunt from a blind or is it feasible to shoot a bird without one? I'm going to have to buy camo for deer anyway, but if I can get one or the other it will depend if I take on turkeys this year.

if i were you, i would just practice with that bow for now. go play chicken on the highway, when ya almost get run over a few times, your adrenalin should be pumpin, whole body shakin..then hit a 3 shot 1" group at 25 yards. then your ready to get a blind and camo.

Practice really isn't an issue, when the weather isn't terrible I shoot for an hour or more every day. I'm also starting up bowfishing this year with a bow specifically set up for it. Its the camo, decoys and blind that I need.

Ya, im sure you COULD hunt turkeys with a bow without a blind. But personally, id recommend one. If you havent hunted turkeys before, you'll soon find out that they can see VERY VERY well. If you arent hidden well enough and you draw your bow, its game over for you.

Consider one of these - they work well if you "brush" them in a little bit.

i dont use that,
but do like it,
packs light, cheap, easy to use,
can hunt turkeys without a blind,
just want everything in your favor so a blind of sorts does help,
also what type of blind will depend on your hunting grounds,

i have used pop up blinds, and am not a fan of them,
bulky to carry, and can never pop it down.

i use what ends up being similar the link,
basically a camo canvas i use shrubs and branches to hold it up
i many walk a few miles in the bush to get to spots so ligh and easy to pack is important to me

I was looking at one of those, with what I've been hearing about a turkey's eyesight I don't know how well that would conceal me at 6'1 drawing a bow. As much as I don't want to pay the extra, I might have to go with a larger blind. If you buy any ground blind like those, make sure they have enough room to move around & shoot.

Meaning; built for two = good for one shooter.


That's the nice thing about the one panel camo tucked into some brush (even at 6'1").

I dont use the shootthru mesh. Wear black Clothes and have the windows behind you shut and move slow. A decoy out in front of you will help to keep their attention off you. What broadheads are you looking at using? Make sure to do your research as far as shot placement. Turkeys are tough tough TOUGH birds to kill and will run off with a misplaced shot.

I was looking at the magnus bullhead, I thought about guillotines but I'm not confident enough in my placement yet that I can make a neck shot. Would I be better off just cutting out the mesh if I do go with them? or maybe make a button for them so I can quietly take down whatever window I'm shooting out of?
