Rem 870 Super Mag or Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag
I am in the market for a new gun and wanted to get your opinion about these two shotguns (Rem 870 Super Mag and the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag). I know there are some of you that swear by the Remington or Mossberg brands, but I am interested in those that have had experience with these two brands/models inparticular. I have been doing a lot of reading and have visited other message boards. I notice that a lot of Mossberg 835 owners have had some serious problems with their guns. Some have had problems with things like the safety breaking off, others that the choke was not lined up correctly with the barrel, and others said that the Mossberg has a tendency to jam with the 3-1/2 in shells. Still others say that they haven't had any problems. For those of you who have experience with both guns, what is your opinion on the two? If you have any links to online reviews that would be great!! Thanks in advance!

IMO Remington is the superior gun... Not even a close comparison.
However, I own the Mossberg. I got it when the 2 shotguns were newer on the market and the price difference was the factor for me at the time. My 835 shoots fine. I have none of the problems you mentioned. The action is stiff and "sloppy", however, which means you have to work the action pretty hard to eject a 3.5" shell. But, that's not really jamming... just a lack of elbow grease on some folks' part. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Either gun will "get you there". But, the Rem is a more refined firearm.

The 870 is a fine gun, but the overbored barrel on the 835 is hard to beat. I have an 835 with a Hastings extended turkey choke tube. It is a turkey thumpin' machine.
I haven't had any trouble with my 835, but then I only use it to turkey hunt. It only gets fired one time a year. I use the 3.5 inch Winchester supreme #4's. Either gun is a good choice. The 870 will probably wear better than the 835, if you plan to use it for everything. I still like the 835 barrel.

Haven't shot the Mossberg...but my supermag performs flawlessly...I Love it.. My son Cody killed his first turkey ( a trophy) & his first duck ( a pintail drake ) with it so needless to say it's priceless

I had a Moss. 835 when it was new out of the box I had to work on it, it would not let a new shell go up into the chamber and yes mine jamed 3.5 shell. My best friends safety broke on his took 4-5 months for the company to fix it. Come to think of it I had a lot of problem with choke also I went throught 4-5 choke and I still could get it to shoot the way I wanted it to. I have a rem. 870 and it has smooth action and shoots great. One thing I like about the Moss. was the ported barrel which my Rem doesn't have. I could tell alot difference in the recoil.

Hands-down IMO the Remington 870. I have two of them. One I have had for 12 or so years and a new one for turkey only, 870 3.5" SP-T.
With both guns I have had no problems. The 870 Express that I have had for 12 years has never jammed. I have killed rabbits, squirels, doves, deer, fox, turkey, crows, and paper targets. All purpose, never let you down, IMO. In my 870 3.5" I have not had a 3.5 shell jam.

I own both and havnt had any trouble with either. I think the 870 is a better all around gun but that the 835 is better for turkey hunting it will throw a heck of a pattern
