You may want start your hunting career with game that doesn't hunt you.

As for a good gun to start with, it will depend on where you are hunting. Most states (but not all) are shotgun or archery only on turkey. A 12 or 20 gauge slug with a rifled barrel would do the job on pigs and deer at a 150 yards or less, but you would need a smooth-bore barrel and bird shot for turkeys (something in #4 or #5). However, if you are new to shooting, the recoil from a slug may not be your best friend. A good caliber for non-winged game would be anything from a .243 to a .308 or .30-06. Still, whether you can use a rifle on deer (or turkeys) will depend on state laws.

Why does this post appear twice from different posters? One from "Rosenberg", one from "Matias"?
