Judging distance?
 

I was just wondering what type of technique do you all use to judge distance in conjuction to cleanly harvesting your bird?Do ya just look at it and guess or is there something you do to know the yardage.I know one guy who uses a rangefinder and I kinda like the idea.Obviously in some situations things happen so fast that you wouldn't be able to use it but those early mornin gobblers that your set-up on waiting to come out of the roost it would be pretty handy.The reason I ask this is I've been fortunate to hunt turks for quite sometime and I thought I would never take a shot that over extended my gun barrel and I'll be if I didn't do it once but twice last year!Boy not only was I disgusted with myself but embarrased too!I was hunting a new place that I never hunted before and I've since found out it is very difficult to judge distance in open and flat woods.I was hunting in a walnut orchard that was like hunting on a football field with rows of trees.The trees weren't big enough to set-up in front of and the grass was less than a inch high so the only place we could set-up was on the edges of the orchard.All I know until my buddy told me the trees were all 10 yards apart I had a real difficult time judging distance in those conditions.I'll tell you another thing too when you sit down distance can be decieving too.Ever shot a bird and as you were going to get it tell yourself "wow that was further than I thought"I know I have.How do you fellas judge your distance?

I guess I really dont give it much of a thought,having shot Archery 3-d's,and Bowhunted for the last 35 years,I just have been able to look at the shot and know what the range is.Practicing range estimation,is something you can do all the time,and become better at it,the more you do it.

ya....me too...i pick a range and saw to myslef dont shoot till hes closer than that....but this year i might have a gun with a pro diamond on it...the one that covers the birds head and breast in 40 yds...always on tv last year...unless my dad gives me his gun and takes the good one! i will be mad!!

This is what I do, I look to see if I can the Toms eyes good than he is in range for my gun.

Guesstimate most of the time ,You dont always have time to use the rangefinder .

..I use the size of the turkey itself to judge yardage,how he apears to the natural eye,im not perfect but it has worked a long time....:)..

I generally guess and I am pretty good at judging distances in the hilly areas. I really have trouble in flat terrain like Florida or Texas.
