Remington's Heavy Shot Load
Well folks I pulled off a great one. A friend of mine got ahold (don't ask how)of some Rem #6 Heavy Shot and their .675 Heavy Shot Turkey choke to try in his 870 and 11-87 turkey guns. Now I've been a fan of Win HV #4 shot for the past few years but, as the truck commercial says, "The rules have changed"! This stuff is awsome! I never thought that #6 shot could ever hold the same energy @40yds as #4's did. My friend's guns (both of them)jumped up to double the # of pellets in the head and neck on the Primos turkey target at 40yds. As stated the choke diameter is .675 however, with some fine tuning by some of the aftermarket folks we will see the bar raised again to a new level. I know shells are expensive along with chokes but, do yourself a favor and try this combo out.

RE: Remington's Heavy Shot Load
Field and Stream did a test article on the Hevi-Shot waterfowl loads a while back. Apparently, due to the shot making process, most of the pellets come out deformed. Many of the pellets actually look like snowmen. HOWEVER, what the did find during the testing was that, even given the non-uniformity in shot, this was the tightest patterning stuff they've tested. EXCEPTIONALLY TIGHT patterns. And to boot, the stuff is just slightly denser than lead, giving you more down range energy with the same size of shot. EXPENSIVE, yes! But it may be just the ticket for someone who just can't find the right load/choke combo...and they may just get it with the standard chokes that came with their gun.

Poult-
Where did you send your barrel for your work? |
RE: Remington's Heavy Shot Load
Great--right after I find a decent price on the turkey loads I've been using and buy 3 boxes of it, out comes a product with a lot of potential. I recently have been reading about it and seeing it advertized. And now, we've got board member's testimonials! Guess I'll have to get me some!

RE: Remington's Heavy Shot Load
Out of curiosity, I contacted HEVI-SHOT to get some info on their turkey loads. Their recommendation was a .665 choke with either #4 or #6 shot. They've had equal success with both sizes. HOWEVER, you must ensure that BOTH your shotgun and the choke are steel-shot rated. This stuff doesn't compress like lead and you could end up with a violent rupture...or worse!
