Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Ghillie's for Turkeys?

My fiancee and I are avid varminters, but she recently decided she wanted to take up turkey hunting. We often use ghillies for deer, antelope, and coyotes, but should she use her ghillie for turkeys as well?

I'm not much of a turkey hunter, never have been, but I usually just wore a camo facemask and jacket, and used a pop up blind, but that was before I built my first ghillie. I'd personally prefer to have the blind around me for turkeys, but then again, I like being able to go mobile and stalk up on game.

Do any of you use a ghillie for turkeys? Or would you recommend to use one or to not?

Thumbs up

If the suit matches your invironment color pattern it will work well. Movement is what gets us busted with the birds and noise, the birds see and hear very very well. I used a 3D fall suit in the spring siting with my back to a thicket and the sun to my rear in the shadows and had birds come within 5 to 8 feet of me twice. One of them got smoked on my smoker the second day of the season. When hunting Turkey you need to be a decent caller and try to be ready facing the area they will come from which is not always an easy thing. Your gun placement is important,I had one come in behind me and stoped at 3 oclock but my gun was at 12 and he eyeballed me the whole time so I could not adjust my position with out spooking him. I had to let him walk. Good Hunting and have a blast, hunting Turkey is a close second to my Deer hunting thrill.

Pop up blinds are great if you have the time to scout and pattern the turkeys, but if you don't then you may have to run and gun to get the best effect. Using ghillie suits is an interesting way of hunting turkeys that could be a great way bag a big bird, but could also be very difficult. It could be worth trying, but be prepared to mix up tactics to increase the odds of bagging a big tom. I've heard of guys laying prone in a field and getting really close to birds. It depends on the terrain of where your hunting to find a strategy that best fits you.

Nothing wrong with a ghillie if it matches the surroundings. The best camo is staying still.

Use everything you have! Turkey have amazing eyesight. If they ever develop a sence of smell like a deer they will overpopulate and rule the world!
