6.5 Hours

...of fall gobbler hunting & I used up my only tag at 8:40 this morning!! It’s a nice problem to have I must say  Went out yesterday & worked 10 gobblers. I missed 3 different gobblers but made up for it this morning on hunt.

I spotted 2 strutters with 10 hens in large field this morning after my first set on 3 gobblers didn’t happen. I had to go around the back of the property & walk in a long way in order to work the birds from the field they were in. It took a long time to get there & when I did they were already gone. I started calling trying to find them when I got a hen to respond but from up in the woods.

I kept hammering her & she finally came back to the field & stood out in the middle just yakking back & forth with me. Next thing I know, here come the 2 gobbler who where still in the field but out of my sight. They ran to the hen & started strutting about 30 yards from me. I got them with in 25 yards but I still could not shoot.

I quit calling with all the birds within 25 yards of me & then everything went silent. I was looking hard to see if they were hopping a stone wall but they didn’t. I look to my left where I had been throwing my calling & there they all were! They all walked right past me & I never saw them over the stone wall.

I let them get about 60 yards down the field edge & moved up on to the stone wall for a better shot into the field in case they feed back that way. They didn’t so I started up my thing throwing the calls behind me where they just were. It was in hope they would come back looking for me. Well they did exactly what I wanted them to do! They came walking right down the stone wall to me.

The 2 gobblers were about leading the way & at about 20 yards started getting a little antsy. Only thing blocking them from me finding behind my bow was the stone wall with some briars. At about 15 yards I thought, it’s now or never. I drew back my bow & put the pin right on the first gobbler & hammered him.

He took flight leaving a trail of feathers so I knew he was hit. He flew about 7 yards across the field landing in a tall pine tree. I just stayed right where I was leaning on the stone wall watching him fight to gain his balance on the pine limb. While watching him I called in the 10 which at one point were only 7 yards from me. They just couldn’t figure out the big green lump on a stone wall talking to them I guess. As I watch the gobble fall from the tree I did the ole bow in the air for victory & boy did those hen figure out what I was them.

I got my quiver & recovered my arrow giving the gobbler a little more time to expire. When I got down into the woods where he dropped I saw him & he was still alive but not moving. So to keep from chasing him I sent a 2nd arrow in him & he was done. I don’t think he was the better of the 2 gobblers but it doesn’t matter to me. It was as always…an incredible hunt with no blind.

Nice turkey with a bow! Sounds like an exciting hunt! I have had a lot of exciting hunts like that with a bow and no blind. Good job!
