KUK'S BUCKS N BEARD RANCH 07-27-2010 07:21 AM

Fall turkey

I'm here in south missouri and I was just wandering about fall turkey's. In the spring I can slay em every day but fall roll's around and I'm lost I don't know what to do to get them to gobble and come in? I know where they are but it just seems like a smart buck after he gets old enough you just never see him.

Most birds don't gobble in the fall. The toms are grouped back up and they sure don't have love on their brain. The best way to hunt birds in the fall is to find a group of hens and poults, bust them up and call them back in. I prefer to thin some hens out and save my gobblers until spring so I can hear them gobble and watch them strut.

Scouting, important in hunting anything, is paramount when dealing with fall turkey's. Especially fall gobblers! Fall turkeys can be patterned as to their travel's. Spot them using an area( field, creek bottom, etc) & set-up an ambush. Scattering birds as mention ed is effective as well, provided they all fly off in different directions! Spot & stalk is also a great way to get into birds, listen for scratching in leaves, or birds walking in leaves as a hen & her poults can sound like school kids walking through the woods! Good luck & have fun!
