99 degrees and 3pm
91 degrees yesteday and 99 degrees if you add humidex. Now that is a combo of time and temp I didn't think I'd ever kill turkey (mostly 'cause I wouldn't think I'd be stupid enough to be hunting in that. I guess it pays to be stupid sometimes)
Couldn't get in to hunt until 1pm so I had spent some time in some dark pines where I figured birds might be hanging out in the heat. After 45 mins I was bored so I decided to go see where I would head to set up in the morning. Out in the winter wheat was 4 hens sticking up. About 200 yds out further I saw just the top of a redhead and 2 eyes. I watched them and figured he was my target for the morning but then they all headed out of the wheat and over into a plowed feild. Frickin 99 degrees and these big black birds are out in the beating sun in a feild! I figured with a big run around the next feild I could get in front of them. They ended up hanging under a big tree in a fence line in the shade. After my 1 mile run I crawled 600 yds to get into calling position. yelped a few times and he strutted but did not move from his shady spot. Called some more and one of the hens got ticked and came yelping back to me. Finally he couldn't take it anymore and he was mine. ![]() |
