just immitate what a crow does last weekend in the missouri youth season my uncle used a crow and a owl and the birds hammered it!!
he did something like "CAA...CA CA CA" one long ca and afew fast ca's after it

I use an owl hoot before daylight and crow calls after sunup. Listen to what the crows are doing and imitate them. It's just a loud noise that turkeys respond to. There is no particular cadense that inspires a responce. Just caw away. I usually use 3 sharp calls, a pause and then 3 more.

It seems to me that you need to put some effort into it to get good responses. A typical crow call does not set them off around here. But, if you really hammer it, then wait a couple seconds, and follow up with another hard note or two, they will gobble at it much more often. The first few notes "prime" the turkeys and the last ones set them off.

I was actually going to post a question about this the other day and forgot until now. In my area, the crows are thick and they never shut up. I don't know if the gobblers are just used to them and ignore them or what. I've seen crows fly over gobblers in the fields and never spark a gobble. For whatever reason, I can't ever get them to gobble at a crow call. I've tried duck and goose calls with very limited success. I usually resort to cutting on a box call, but I hate doing that without setting up first in case the birds are close and move in quickly.

What are some other good locator calls besides an actual turkey call?
