I have searched and if this topic is hidden somewhere I apologize. So this is my second full turkey season and I absolutly love it! Yesterday morning I got the closest ive ever been to a roosted gobbler and to my amazment no hens around that I could here. So I lightly called he gobbled repeatedly, then flew AWAY from where I was setup but continued to gobble probably 30 times id guess. Needless to say my heart was racing more than any deer ive ever killed! Ive decided I made a mistake somewhere in that time period because he never commited to coming in.

Anyway thats the backstory heres my question...I went back this morning, hes in the same area gobblin. I couldnt see anything as its dark and next thing I know there he goes flyin off..I was standing about 10 yds from his tree! :bash: Anyway he musta flew a half mile cause I could just here him blazin through the woods haha. What do I do in this situation? Does he come back to the area or is he relocated? Thanks in advance and sorry for the story but I was alittle mad at myself!

I wouldn't worry too much. He will more than likely roost close to where he has the past couple of nights. Won't you try setting up in the direction he is flying off from his roost. Don't call when he is still in the tree. When he pitches down, then start some soft calling.

I hunt small wood lots, so I can't afford to move too much. I don't get discouraged if a tom flys away from me when he leaves his roost. They usually come back in an hour or two, or another bird comes within range of my calling. If I have enough woods to move around in, I still call from one spot for at least an hour before moving.

Sounds like you may have been a little too close to the roost. I'd try setting up before light a bit further away, preferably in the direction he's been flying down. If you call to him at all while he's on the roost, just give him a single series of soft tree yelps to let him know you're there then shut up. Hit him with some soft calls when he hits the ground. Don't call every time he gobbles, he may hang up and wait for you (the hen) to come to him. Play hard to get. Make him come looking for you. Good luck!

Thanks guys! Im pretty sure thats what I did the first morning, call to much and he got hung up. But thats my rookie mistake. I think ill try him again this weekend as its looking like me laying outta work mon and tues has caught up and im not gonna get back in the woods this week. Hopefully hes back to his area and ill try setting up opposite of what I did first morning the way he flew down. Wish me luck and thanks!
