Decoys or no decoys ?????
For early season turkey hunting, what decoy set up should I use? Hen only, hen and jake, 3-4 hens, or no decoys ??????
I'm just not sure. Some of the birds are still grouped up in bigger flocks. I hunt in Wisconsin 1st season. Any information is appreciated. |

Fields or openings... strutter. Woods just calling.

Early in the season, just about any combination will work. If you're hunting open areas, have them set up so that an approaching tom has to look for them. Put them below a small rise, behind some brush, etc. You often can get hangups if they are visible a long way off. Good luck this week sounds like the weather will be pretty good.

Early season before hens have started to incubate, they ae in bigger groups with toms. I like lots of hen decoys with no jake or gobbler. Throw out a half dozen and try to be realistic some feeding, a couple looking around. I try to keep them all heading a general direction like a flock feeding and traveling together. I rarely use a gobbler decoy at all.

Most times I never use them. I believe some guys are using them as a crutch and think you can't kill a bird without one. Now if you are hunting a wide open space it may help you out but if there is any cover to speak of they are not needed. I like to work a bird in and keep him looking for the "hen". Many times a gobbler will see the deke and stay out and wait for the hen to come on out to him. If he thinks the hen may be slipping away and can't see it then they will slip on in and try and find her.

I'd opt for a Jake and Hen or Strutter and Hen for early season huting. This is the set-up that has paid off more consistently for me. Good luck
