would this be unethical?

i usually hunt for gobblers with my old man. due to an injury, he will not be in the woods this spring. he has his full hunting license with 2 turkey tags. would it be unethical for me to take 2 extra birds and use his tags? is there a difference between each of us taking 2 and only me taking 4? im trying to do what is right. thanks.

OhioBowhunter 03-09-2010 05:51 PM

i personally think yes but thats just me. is there any chance he could get out in a blind or something like that?

best of luck to you and your old man
Storm

wait let me revise this.

i feel it wouldnt be "unethical" but it would be illegal. i personally wouldnt do it but its not unethical IMO

Fieldmouse 03-09-2010 05:56 PM

Use technology. Rig his gun with remote control and camera. You do the work, he pushes the button. Works for me and it would be pretty cool to boot.

ksfowler 03-09-2010 05:58 PM

Well the tags are assigned to him. I don't know what your tags are like but we have our name on them and we have to sign them. So I am guessing that it is illegal to do so. It isnt really ethical either I dont think.

Sorry to hear about your dad, but no it isn't right for you to shoot some one elses birds, if there not in the woods hunting with you. Then you may as well by a licsens for your mon and other family members and friends and hunt every day of the season , same thing. I would love to do that, but it isn't right, can you get away with it maybe!

nick_bleuer76 03-09-2010 06:01 PM

Call you local game warden, he will tell you...

OhioBowhunter 03-09-2010 06:02 PM

good idea nick. yeah just explain your story to him most game wardens are very understanding and are willing to help out with any problems (atleast in my experiences)

Sheridan 03-09-2010 06:04 PM

If your Father could be involved in some way, I would understand why it was done. If you mean you just harvesting twice the amount of game, I would say that's unethical !

SJAdventures 03-09-2010 06:26 PM

Not a matter of ethics. It is illegal.

genesis27:3 03-09-2010 07:07 PM

I am pretty sure thats illegal:-l

superstrutter 03-09-2010 07:17 PM

Definately illegal. You would be killing two birds over YOUR legal limit. If your dad can't get out, he'll just have to eat his tags.

tschaef 03-10-2010 03:57 AM

Even where party hunting is legal (as it is for deer in Ontario) the tag holder has to be out in the woods with you, within a reasonable distance and able to be contacted so that THEY can tag your game. I've never heard of party hunting for turkeys.
It would be poaching and therefore unethical.

Ethics are largely subjective. So if your moral compass is saying no.... then you probably already know the answer.

I cannot speak to law in your state, but in VA where I live, what you described is illegal. Tags are non-transferable and it is illegal to tag an animal harvested by another hunter. The season bag limit here is 3 birds per license year, be them shot spring or fall.

I know, like you know, that four dead turkeys is four dead turkeys, but thats the way it works.

Not legal.

mr.mc54 03-10-2010 02:05 PM

Call a Game Warden! Are you serious? That is as illegal as hell. To me, if it's illegal, it's unethical. Sorry about your dad, buy him a turkey.

Pygmy 03-10-2010 02:35 PM

It would be illegal in any state that I am aware of...

Is it unethical to intentionally violate state game laws...??...

Yes....??...No....??...Gee, that's a TOUGH one...!!!!...

I guess you will have to make up your own mind...

If your local game warden stops you, good luck...:s4:....

RockyMtnGobblers 03-10-2010 03:50 PM

Call a game warden in your area.

If your name is not on the license than you cant use that license, plane and simple. ILLEGAL AND UNETHICAL.

Treebeard 03-10-2010 05:14 PM

Um let me think........NOT!
We all want to shoot more birds but that just wont fly.
You should still have your Dad buy the tags as it helps pay for the right to hunt and manage the bird population even if you dont fill them!

blackheel 03-10-2010 05:16 PM

Illegal and unethical.

Mojotex 03-10-2010 05:27 PM

Sorry to hear about your dad. Using another's tags is illegal everywhere I have hunted - deer or turkey .... Ark., Tex., Mon., and Ala. As far as ethical? I would not even if it was legal .... but that's your call is it not?

oaks_and_pines 03-12-2010 09:48 AM

ILL FINISH THIS....
illegal? = Yes
unethical? = No
should you do it? = its up to you, do you need the food?

fingerz42 03-13-2010 10:12 AM

Well, not only is it unethical in most people's minds, it's also illegal. His tags can only be filled by him. Otherwise it is a poached animal.
