We have had several of those over the years. Had 2 of them in one flock about 4-5 years ago. Killed both of them during fall season.

Nice pic. There was one at the convention, mounted of course.

tsaxybabe 03-03-2010 09:35 PM

Cool! What causes a turkey to be like that? I've never even heard of a white turkey. Are they legal to shoot? Just curious, it looks awesome!

It is genetics. It is an actual color phase. It is known as the New England turkey. The English brought these birds over from England and they bred with the wild turkey population. That is why the genes are in the poputaltion. Some beleive that the color phase exhisted in Mexico and Central America. This color phase is still raised in captivity, I raise around 50 a year. Although the domestic versions are not as pretty or white is the wild type. Wild type usually is a more rare, Silver Narraganset. Not many are in the domestic population. When I go to an exotic bird auction I can usually tell when someone has nabbed a Silver Narragansett from the wild, and I am quick to buy it. Don't worry, the one in the picture won't be killed by me!

Actually, not an Albino at all.

It is a "Smoke Phase" hen. They aren't anywhere near as rare as what an Albino would be. However, it's the coolest color phase. Bronze turkeys are also awesome!

I posted the actual, technical term. It is actually a separate breed, rather than a color phrase. Meleagris gallopavo silvestris, also known as the Narragansett Turkey, or Silver Narragansett Turkey depending on status. My uncle shot a red color phased turkey, it was awesome.

Great pic. We have one where I hunt. I seen it last December during Blackpowder in Southeast Kentucky

nick_bleuer76 03-07-2010 10:23 AM

The White Hen came back, but she brought a friend. She is actually kind of hard to spot in the background.
