Pattern

Hi first post on the fourm. been reading on it for a while. but i have a question. patterned my 870 supermag with a .670 choke with win supremme 3.5 in. 2 oz. 5 shot at 30 yards and got a very even 95 hits in a 6in circle. is this a good pattern ??? havent had a chance for any longer shots yet. thanks in advance.

Honestly it sounds like a good result but I am not entirely sure because the standard is number of hits in a 10" circle at 40 yards. I've never shot 30 yard patterns, nor have I counted hits in a 6 inch circle, so I don't have any frame of reference by which to judge your pattern results.

If you would shoot another shot at a laser or tape-measured 40 yards for comparison I could offer you an opinion. Draw a 10" diameter circle around the most dense section of the pattern then count the hits. Take a picture and post it here. Would be glad to offer my opinion, free and worth every penny!:sign0016:

Thanks for thee replies. i read the how-to-patterning after i shot. my patteran is dead center i checked that. the reason for the 6in circle is because that how big a butter dish top is. will try 40 yards this weekend. thanks

Its good enough to kill a bird. But I would still try it at 40.

I like to get some of those turkey targets, and if I can get a hand full of pellets through the vitals out to 40-50 yards, I'm happy.

With that result it is a dead bird at 30 yards. Checking at several distances is a great idea. Don't forget to check "close". The only miss I have had in 40+ years came at about 8 yards. Pattern was more or less a 2 inch circle !!! I'd check at 10-20-30-40-50 yards just for the knowledge of what the gun is doing. And that is good advice to always use a life sized turkey target.
