Turkey's seen strutting

I've got a buddy that has already seen a couple toms strutting in a hay field. Seems kinda' early for central Alabama.......maybe the boys are going to be fired up this year.:barmy:

I just hope their stamina is good and not just good out the gate.:s4:

How warms it been down there. I see strutters in March here in Indiana. Were about a month behind Alabama. Could be possible...

Things way out west of west are looking like early action this spring too. Toms are starting to posture a little in open fields.

We live in a area where we see turkeys everyday of the year and have seen them strutting in the middle of the winter . Its not just when breeding season is on that they will strut .

Hard to see turkeys strutting in 40,000 acres of hard woods... So I wont be seeing that for at least 2 month:cry:

Yeah i seen 2 toms strutting in late December during muzzleloader season here in Michigan.

Heard two birds gobble yesterday afternoon, while shed hunting.

Turkeys are weird like this sometimes

I remember a few years ago I was on the way to play golf with a buddy of mine in south-central Tennessee. It was July. I am always looking around for critters when driving in rural areas and on this day I saw a group of hens out in a small field with a strutting gobbler about 150 yards from the road. I didn't believe my eyes so I turned arouned and went back to verify - there he was, strutting his crazy butt off following those hens around that field. IN JULY - In Tennessee - and it was HOT.

Turkeys do really crazy things sometimes.

I saw three Toms yesterday going at it a bit......jumping around and trying to spur each other and the field was snow covered.

I've seen birds struting and gobbling earley and the season suck. But seen it again and had one of the best seasons ever. Don't think well ever know whats going on in that head of theres.

Turkeys gobble and strut year round. I have got some pictures of birds strutting this winter. Only go to the river bottom once a week, to much snow.

Probably has more to do with their establishing dominance than anything. It's still a little too early for breeding. A friend of mine saw two big strutters about three weeks ago, so it's not all that uncommon.

I'm another that has witnessed strutters in the middle of winter on a number of occasions. Last Nov. while sitting on a tree stand deer hunting, there were a bunch of gobblers going crazy on the roost. It brought a smile to my face just thinkin' about next spring.

I was deer hunting and I heard a tom gobble, so I gave him a couple yelps with my mouth. Next thing I know there is a tom flying right at me. He land about 3 feet away from my ladder, looks up and takes off again. So, they might be looking for action when ever they can get it.

Gobbling Buck 02-08-2010 05:11 PM

The weather has been crazy down here. We've had more consecutive cold days than I can remember. It did warm up a bit around the time the birds were seen.

I've seen them gobble during November & December deer season. I even had one gobble one time at a rattle bag while I was using it. I know they are unpredictable at best. I hope this is a sign of good things to come. My season last year was full of a lot of near misses. Seemed like I found a way to mess it up every time.:bash: I also hunted quite a bit of public ground and found some willing folks to help me mess it up too. None of it was intentional, so I just had to chalk it up to a valuable learning experience.:s4:

Not a full strut, but close

OhioBowhunter 02-15-2010 12:17 PM

we have trail pics of 2 toms strutting in a corn pile with about 10 hens and a couple more toms in january

gyro288 02-15-2010 02:56 PM

Another possibility this time of year for toms and hens too is
they will appear to be strutting but they are trying to keep warm.
We use to raise turkeys of all breed, the toms and the hens would walk around or stands dead still all puffed up. Just another possibility is all.
We had a couple warmer days a couple weeks ago. While we were skeet shooting, everytime we would shoot a turkey would gobble at us.lol thought is was funny

SouthernStrut56 02-15-2010 06:22 PM

I figure they'll be really fired up this year down here in Alabama and other places in the south that usually have warmer winters. This winter has been much colder and wetter than usual, and I figure when the days start gettin longer and the average temp starts to rise, these birds are gonna go nuts! That's what I'm predicting anyways.

BigBuck95 02-15-2010 07:06 PM

Mix a "few" crushed up viagra in there and you'll have the longest season in the history of Alabama Turkey hunting:eek2:
