Outcast Toms
Anybody know how to best get an outcast Tom to respond and come in during spring season? We had a HUGE one and he was with 3 other dominant toms, but he seemed too big and was the outcast. If he's still around, how does one go about trying to get him to come in or get close enough for a shot??

An outcast that was "with" 3 other Tom's? That doesnt sound like a outcast... it sounds like the other 3 were jelious.

Keep your calling really light and infrequent, and wait a little until the main flock has passed befoer you start. He might think he's got a chance at a hen that nobody noticed. If he's an outcast, he's not likely to gobble much (at all?) if there's a chance he'll get whupped.
A lot depends on knowing their travel patterns. If you're after an outcast, a decoy may attract a more dominant tom. If one of the more dominant birds makes a showing, then just bust him. |
