Spring Hunt
 

Ok so it is going to be my first year turkey hunting and i know how to use all the calls correctly. I really want to know about decoy and specifics for the sring tukey hunt. Also i am using a bow and i want to know where a good spot to hit them is.

Decoys some use them some dont. Its a matter of preference. Myself I use decoys. I only use hen decoys. But then again thats my preference. I always place my decoys usually (2) at 20 yards, and I place them directly out in front of me. They are seperated between 5-10 yards apart. I myself prefer not to use the Tom decoys. Ive never had a good experience using these decoys. Some will swear by using Tom decoys. Like I said its a matter of preference. When you shoot at a Turkey you need to shoot him in the head and neck area. Myself I usually aim for the neck. Hope this helps. Anymore questions feel free to ask. I tried using a strutting gobbler one time, and it sent two jakes running right past without paying attention. On any hunt I've killed a bird using dekes, it's always been a hen and jake combo. I probably won't use a gobbler again, just for fear of scaring off another bird.

As for calls, I'm no pro myself but I bought about every call I could afford on clearance and tried everything out. The best thing I've found is an HS Strut slate call, don't know what it's called but it has a clear green plastic base. The only calls I make are yelps and purrs, always together. I'll yelp four or five times, then purr three or so...then repeat the process one more time and wait. Nothing big, nothing great just simple and does the trick. I've only hunted three years and have called in two 24lb gobblers, a 21lb gobbler and a jake.

One thing I found out about turkey hunting is...Don't complicate the process. If they are coming in, they are going to. If they aren't going to come in, be quiet and wait. I talked to one for almost an hour last season, then just sat back and waited. Almost an hour later I hit the slate and got three yelps out before he blasted off about thirty yards in front of me. Remember KISS...Keep It Simple Stupid, it's not as hard as it's made out to be.

if you use a strutter it will likely scare off the younger less dominate birds which is what i prefer any way....if your bow hunting keep the decoys less than 20 yards away from you and hunt in a blind

I prefer 2 use a hen decoy the first weekend and after that i dont bring one.as for where to hit them with a bow..i couldnt tell ya...i would guess right in the wing or the head.But im not that good of a shot.

When bowhunting for turkeys I prefer to have the decoys 10 yards and closer.
Remember hit em high and watch em die, hit em low and watch em go.

and remember: Turkeys have better eyesight than that of humans, so movement, especially if you have one coming or if you can see one, must be almost non-existant, you should have your bow in hand, and just draw very slowly. Also, hunting from a blind is best. Double Bull makes good blinds, and so does primos, such as the GroundMax. Good luck, and happy turkey hunting.
