question please?

I am a new guy to hunting and i have a question. i am thinking about buying the remington 870 waterfowl shotgun. Could this gun still be used to hunt turkey? its got a 28" barrell is that to long? what kind of choke should i put in it?

You can use it for geese and turkey. I bought a Madd Maxx .665 choke for my Rem. 870 Super Mag and you would have to see the pattern it throws to believe it.

Sure can !

Get an "extended" extra full turkey choke and a box of 3" #4,#5 or #6 shot and you're ready to go !

You can use it. I used my 870 28" barrel for turkey for quite a while. I did eventually get a mossy 835 with a shorter barrel, I don't particularly like carrying the longer barreled gun thru the woods. I just prefer a shorter barrel. When you get a choke, you should get one rated for heavy shot, the patterns are generally much tighter than lead loads. I'm sure if you search this forum you will get lots of good info on choke/load combinations to try. Higher end chokes like the Rhino, Pure Gold, and Indian Creek throw awesome patterns but cost a few $$. A quality less expensive choke like the Primos Jelly Head throw some great patterns too. Welcome to the addiction!

You can always purchase a shorter barrel. Remington offers a 23" with rifle sights, which will allow adjustment for a more accurate POI. IBased on patterns I've seen through several high priced chokes, a Primos Jelly head is one of the best chokes for HD shot through an 870. It's what I have in my 870, and with Nitro ammo, the pattern is devastating.

Thank you all for the info. I am a 17 year old kid still learning the ropes :party0005: Is there any other shotguns that you would recomend for waterfowl and turkey? under $600 and reliable like the 870.

Take a look at Charles Daly field gun in 12 ga. I carry on with a 24 in barrel with the Undertaker choke tube and #6 Winchester copper plated. The gun patterns so tight I have taken toms out to 50yds. Just so food for thought, from a rambling man.

You can't go wrong with 870. However, you may want to check out the Browning BPS or the Mossberg 835. Heck you could check out the Benelli Nova also. I either have these guns or hunt with guys that do and their all pretty good shotguns. The 870 probably is the most reliable IMO.
