I would have to agree with you guys. I have been fooled enough times to say that it is almost impossable to tell if a bird is a gobbler or a jake just by how well he can let one rip. My best bird ever had a broken and short Gobble that I thought might have been a jake, He had 1 3/8 " spurs on both legs. I have also seen Jakes that could Gobble the bark off from trees. Only when I hear one that sounds like a sick dog trying to bark do figure him for a jake, but then you never know.

I CAN !!!!! A loud gobble followed by a loud BANG is a long beard, a loud gobble followed by a " shi# , I could have sworn that was a longbeard" is a Jake.:D:D:D

I don' t think you can tell one on one, but there is a variance. This year on 2 different occasions in two different parts of the State, I had a pair of Tom' s gobbling together and one was always deep and crisp and one was raspy and not as defined. Now I never did get to a visual on either one of those hunts so I couldn' t say which was which, but it kind of seemed like it was an older tom w/ a younger one? But on trying to determine how old a bird is by his gobble I think is too hard and probably like trying to age one by his beard? One of our NWTF chapter members this year, had a Tom gobble all the way in, bagged him then noticed his beard barely popped through the feathers.

After 4 years, over a period of 90-120 days a year, 2-4 hours a day, 4-7 days a week, researching turkeys, hearing as many as 590 gobble in one day, and being able to see many of those birds to determine if they were toms or jakes, I can' t do it.

No two male turkeys (or elk) sound exactly alike, and you can' t make generalizations that apply to all jakes, or to all toms.

If you want answers to questions like these from me, come on over to the " T.R.' s Tips" forum, where I can find them.

God bless,

Looking at the replies, some guys said some jakes sound different, implying you could tell the difference. I was just putting my 2 cents worth, just like everybody else.

All I meant (in your quote of me) was if you want me to answer (from a researchers view) I can usually be found on T.R.' s Tips. I don' t get to the other forums that often.

May God bless all of you and your families ,

T.R.

and one was always deep and crisp and one was raspy and not as defined.
Well what I was trying to point out was in both instances the " deep" gobble and the " raspy" gobbles sounded alike. But each instance was over 250 miles apart. I' m by no means saying I know more than either TR or BT,just in shear number of years of expeience. But I could tell you that those 2 pair of Tom' s sounded exactly alike, if I' m making sense. And I' m just making a theory that maybe there is something to age and the type of Gobble they have, but there will always be varibles.
