Now the story, It has been a rough week as far as turkey hunting goes, with all the storms and the birds are just about to quit gobbling. I hunted every morning this week and some mornings all you could hear is just a few faint gobbles, so far that it was hard to tell which direction they came from. Thursday morning I took a newbie out to try and get one called in for him and we heard 2 different turkeys, each one of them gobbled about 3 or 4 times on the roost and then shut-up when they hit the ground. Well this morning I was hunting alone and went back to the same area in hopes of getting close enough to one before daylight that I might get him fired-up a little before he flew down, I was lucky cause I parked within 300 yards of him and he gobbled once and I headed to him, I got to where I thought I was close and waited for another gobble but none, so I got out my Cody glass call and cut and purred at him real soft and he cut me off before I was done, I was within a 125 yards and in a great place, just a small narrow field between us and he was in the woods on the other side about 50 yards deep, so I found me a tree and set-up on him about 10 steps back in the woods on my side of the field. I set for several minutes and no gobbles, I did' nt want him to shut-up like he did the morning before so I cut and purred at him again, he cut me off again, he really liked that purring. I set about 5 minutes and he gobbled again, he was at the edge of the field right across from me but I could' nt see him for a small cedar bush that was about 10 steps in front of me. I purred once more then a hen answered me from behind and to the left a little, I thought oh no, she is going to mess me up big-time. I focused my attention back to him and cut and purred once more and this time he was well within range but I could' nt see him at all, he came completely across the the little field behind that cedar bush, then I caught a glimpse of something moving from my left and sure enough it was the hen coming in. She came up right in front of me and started milling around and I thought well, I have a live decoy, and in just a few minutes he stepped out from behind the cedar bush in full strut with his attention 100% on the little hen in front of me, I let him break his strut and at 30 yards he gave me a perfect shot. The only thing I wish was that I could have watched him come across the field and the cedar bush had' nt obstucted my view so much, but all in all it was a great hunt and one that I will remember a long time, just like all the rest of them. Turkey hunting memories are some of the best.
