A single turkey egg just laying there.

 I found a single egg just lying on the ground while looking for a place to set my decoy. I have seen this only once before. I supposed that it was dropped by the hen who happened to be in the " wrong place at the right time" . There are 3-4 gobblers in this area and I was wondering if the gobblers are so heated up that they have been chasing the hens around instead of allowing them to go to nest to lay their eggs in the proper place. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you!

I doubt the gobblers are harrassing and chasing the hens. Probally some other creature spooked the hen off the nest while she was laying. Its too bad its gone to waste. That could be a future boss gobbler in there. Makes you wonder what percentage of eggs laid actually hatch and survive.[:o]

I found some single eggs last year just laying out in a big bottom field, We had had alot of rain and flooding last year and I just figured it was a nest that had been washed away. Its beyond me how an ol' hen turkey can even hatch the eggs out let alone raise a brood of little ones, I mean everything in the woods form black snakes to bobcats is after them.

I have never seen a turkey egg in the woods. I would guess that it was an egg that was stolen from the nest by a varmet of some type.

Just curious

What other creatures thrive on turkey eggs/poults?

I would think a fox might have a field day.
