Tryin to bust a gobbler this weekend.
 

Got my gun patterned. Found the turkeys. Now I need some help. The land I have permission to hunt on is about a quarter mile away from a deep river bottom that runs through the area. Every morning and evening I can hear the turkeys gobbling and calling down in the bottom. If I can' t hunt down their and the closest I can get is about a quarter mile away, what should I do? The land I can hunt has a large field between it and the river bottom. On the side of the field opposite the river bottom, is the woodlot that I can hunt in. I was thinking I should set up as close to the river bottom as I can and just try to call one in. What do you think?

From what I' ve seen on the Weather Channel, its gonna rain bigtime this weekend. If it does rain, the turkeys will leave the woods and may go to your field. Set up on the edge of the field, decoys 20-25 yards out in the field. (I assume you can hunt the field.) Use monofilament to give a hen some motion. If you have any idea where the birds will enter the field, set up near their field entry point. If not, get the decoys up high in the field (but within range of your setup, of course) where the toms will have the greatest opportunity to see your decoys. You are fighting the odds, though, if it does not rain, as in that case it is more likely the toms will stay in the riverbottom all the time. I' ve seen turks walk directly across a plowed or no high grass/only low crop residue field in a rainstorm. In good weather, I' ve only seen them either go to the center and strut/feed, or work their way around the edge. Good luck!!!
