RE: sight suggestions

Sights are like colors, favorite pizza chains, and cars - everybody has a preference.

I set up a Mossberg 835 as a turkey-only gun. It now wears a low power (1.75 - 4) Bushnell Trophy scope. I like the scope because it works in any light that you are likely to kill a turkey in,no batteries, and is rugged and reliable.

I tried the fiber optic sights and they weren't for me. This gun shoots an extremely tight pattern with Nitro Hevishot Triple (4X5X7) max loads. Beyond 40 yards the fiber optic sights subtended too much for me and covered too much of the target. With the scope I know exactly where I am aiming - no guess work. I've cleanly taken turkeys with one-shot kills at ranges beyond what I previously thought possible. I get 246 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards.

A word of caution - you really need to spend a great deal of time shooting and patterning your gun to find the exact center of the pattern.

As for 6 shot not being big enough, the load I shoot is mostly hevishot 7s. It will flat knock a turkey off his feet well beyond 40 yards. You don't need to reduce your shot count by going to 5s. Hevishot 6s are all you need unless you want to step up to the ultimate, NITROs

I have the TruGlo Magnum gobble dot sight on my Mossberg. It comes highly recommended for a fiber optic sight.Next season it will be wearing a Burris FastFire II. Check them out.
