First Gobbler, Thanks Mom!
I lost my mom to cancer last Saturday. Her caregiver said that at the moment she took her last breath the flowers on a potted plant instantly wilted. Odd.
After the church services, we were all in our cars waiting for the hearse to lead the way. After a long while the hearse driver comes up to me in my car and says, "This is really embarrasing, but the battery is dead, I've got cables can you give me a jump?". When I got back to my car my wife says, "Well, your mother sucked the life out of those flowers and she sucked the life out of that battery too! Maybe she wasn't ready to leave just yet." My sister-in-law says, "These things always happen in threes, something else is going to happen."
Dawn broke today with a slight drizzle, not cold at all. Lot's of gobbling, lot's of hen talk. At dawn a small young hen makes her way into my decoys and hangs out for a half hour. She still has her baby talk, "Kee, kee kee, cholk cholk." I could hear her all morning even after the gobbling had ceased. She was always nearby. At about 10:30am I hear some gobbling 200yds to the west. The little hen just, "Kee, kee, kee, cholk cholk" After a half an hour two nice gobblers are coming in from the west, the little hen is silent. I shot the lead gobbler at 35yds and immediately ran out to see him. No sign of the other gobbler, but the little hen was running away to the west.
I like to think that the spirit of my mom was that little hen, she led that gobbler to me, and sucked the life out of him. Well actually that would be me.
