Seriously? youd shoot a tom at 80 yards with your shotgun?
What kind of gun and choke and shot combo are you using?
You ever patterned it at 80 yards?

If you have a 12 gauge, that you know is going to be a more efficent or powerful turkey killer than a 20 gauge... I think you should look in the mirror before pulling the ethics card. There are people who shoot turkeys with .270s at 200 yards down the sides of mountains.... and its totally legal and if thats what they want to do then cool.... whatever... get over yourself.

RE: 20 gauge patterns?
c'mon, truth is that when anyone says " 70 but no more." they really mean they'll take shots just about as far off as they can see a beard and another truth that normally exists is that they have NO IDEA how their gun shoots that far away
the question was on patterning a 20 gauge vs a 12 gauge ....... that question really hasn't been answered yet has it ?
I'd like to see some photo's of some targets, comparison's etc because I'm curious too.

RE: 20 gauge patterns?
I was not "pulling an ethics card". I was completely curious. Id love to know that my gun kept a pattern to drop toms at 70 yards but unfortunately it does not.
So does anyone have a target showing patterns of theyre 20 gauge? or know what kind of patterns they are getting?

To the topic at hand here.....
Beretta 391 Sporting 20ga
Primos Tight Wad .575
Hevi-13 1 1/4oz #6
40 yards
93 hitsin 10" with 226 hits total = 41.2%
It won't win any medals, but it will for sure whack one at 40 yards. It is mighty nice carrying a 6# gun that kicks like a pellet rifle.
FWIW, this was the best my gun did with what I've got. I'm sure with some more time and money invested I could get her to do better, but considering I don't shoot past 40 with my 835(that actually can kill birds at 70 yards by the way), its a rather moot point to pump $150 more dollars into it.

RE: 20 gauge patterns?
And here is my 835 at the same distance with what amounts to a similar shell.
Mossberg 835 Grand Slam
Pure Gold .670
Hevi-13 1 3/4oz #6
40 yards
207 hits in 10" with 391 hits total = 52.9%
Looking at the %... you can draw a loose conclusion that my 12 is shooting about 10% tighter at 40 yards than my 20 gauge.... but what you really have to take into consideration is the sheer volume of pellets.... it has twice the number of 10" hits as well as twice the number of total pellets anyway.
That same gun and load with a different choke tube gave me 86 in a 10" with 263 total at 70 yards. I weighed the average (because I shot left a bit and I know several pellets missed the square yard sheet of paper) and came out with 32.6%. At about $4 a shell... I wasn't about to redo the test in the name of science. That will still kill a bird very much dead.... but the center of my pattern was about 15" left of where it should have been. It comes down to the you factor a lot more at range... and I just won't do it. No different than with a bow.... so many little things get magnified past 50 yards.

I am curious how 20 gauges pattern compared to 12 gauge. I realize there will be less pellets and such but for some reason I really want to hunt turkeys with a 20 gauge. Not sure why...maybe kind of nice though. Anywho...I was just curious if anyone here has patterned their 20 gauge and what the results were?
If you have..could you please also note the Gun model, choke, distance, and shell.
Thank you!

RE: 20 gauge patterns?
i shoot a remington 870 20 g. i have a super full choke and i shoot winchester 3 inch out of it. i just shot it the other ay at 27 yards and it had about 20 or so pellets in a bout a 5 inch circle. i not sure if this is good or bad but it made my friends 12 gauge look horrible. he started complainin immedietley."im getting a new choke!"haha
