Wow bow tek!!! That's impressive, looks like you got yourself a honey hole! I've found a few here in Va. but i'm far from 2000.

looking good. but some of those look like "top hats". they look like morels but they aint and if not done right can be dangerous i've heard.

that reminds me ofback home. consider yourself lucky and blessed that you are in a place that you can go out and find them, i wish everyday i was. what kind of trees are you mostly finding them under? you ever find those big beer bottle yellow morels down there in kentucky?

Mohunter the ones you are talking about are called spike or peckerheads they are indeed are morels they are in the same family as the blacks here is a close up picture I took off a morel website


I don't like them much they are fragile I give them all away.

No I don't find the big yellow very often. I live across the river from In. They find the big monster yellows all the time. I find alot of big numbers every year. Just not the giants

Mo, I believe the morels your refering to as "top hats" are the half-free variety. They have a small cap and long stem.There are three kinds where i live white, black, and the half-free which alot of people 'round here refer to as the snake head. All three are delicious and completely safe to eat, of course you may make yourself sick from eating too many!

maybe it was a different variety i was thinking of. i will have to check. should know considering our town named itself the mushroom capital od the world and even has a mushroom festival.
I know that they are very fragile and usually just leave them. but thats because there is no need with as many morels as there is around here.
