Hey Big Timer

On your list mark down what you use all the time and that you don't you might be able to get rid of.

I have a bud who takes 1 pot call and 2 motuh calls - a low stool and roll up blind and a wad of TP and a therma cell. That's it!

But the more you can handle - the longer you can stay comfortable - the longer you can stay out and enjoy the day - the better chance yo have to whack a bird.

RE: Too much junk

My biggest problem is the seat and the decoy bag. Again, I have a real bad back and on top of all of that I have to use a cane to keep my balance. Trophyhunter60. I appreciate what you are say and will check and see what I can really cut back on. I have never used my box call, crow call, and owl hoot but they are light weight items that just fill up spaces in my vest. I'm not a veteran turkey hunter so I bought all of this stuff "thinking that I needed it. Example: owl call, I don't when to use it, the crow call sounds nothing like a crow to me. Last year I killed my first tom using a home made decoy and the other one was kinda of a stalk. Again, the most cumbersome items are the decoys and the seat but I really need the seat due to my back.

RE: Too much junk

I know I'm very guilty of carrying too much stuff...I blame it on the advent of turkey vests, they give you so many pockets for so many different things i just can't help but fill them all! haha

Lets see in my vest now I have:

-two primos freaks
-primos jackpot slate
-enticer wet one slate
-five strikers
-slate conditioner
-two box calls
-crow call
-three mouth calls
-5 shotgun shells
-mask/gloves
-bug spray
-two dekes and homemade wooden stakes because i always lose the ones they come with haha
-usually a couple granola bars
-bottle of water
-license
-knife

and i'm sure there are a few odds and ends I'm forgetting. Do I need all that stuff? absolutely not! Do I use every call and every striker? Not necessarily everyday, but over the course of the season they all get used. There have been other times that people I'm hunting with forget a call, or lose a striker and I always have one to loan them haha. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I think that turkey hunting is one of the few types of hunting where gadgets actually make a difference. Having another striker that gives just a little bit different sound can make the difference between a bird not coming and him charging in. Or having the ability to sound like multiple birds might make the difference. You can kill a lot of birds with nothing but some faded camo and an old box call and there is something to be said for simplicity but i like the flexibility all those calls give me.

I carry a lot with me too. If I hadn't had the TP with me last weekend, I would have had a big problem.[&:]

I dumped the vest this year and went back to just a fanny pack. I carried 2 mouth calls, 2 locator calls, a Primos Freak and striker, 5 shells. I wore my gloves and face mask. Thats it. Killed a bird10 minutes in and didn't have to pack 30 pounds of junk in.

Thats when those green leaves come in handy...... or one of your socks. :)

Not saying that I've used the sock before but I know someone who has.
