Wow have I put in the time and dealt with silent gobblers---gobblers that go the other way when I call---and about everything else that can go wrong.
I saw this big boy in a freshly planted field around 8:00 AM this morning with my hunting buddy. We were way back in the woods and tried to close the distance. Suddenly he folded up and trotted off. I felt sure that he could not have seen us. Sure enough---we saw a coyote come into the field. All this after spending almost 2 hours trying to coax two Toms that were gobbling their heads off about 75 yards away. They just would not move!

Anyway, I decided to go back this afternoon about 4:15 PM and look at the planted field. All I saw was a big hen but could not see over the hump. I thought I heard a gobble but was not sure. A few minutes later about 5 other hens came down the middle of the field toward the one I had seen. They were moving at a good clip. About 30 seconds later---there he was---right behind them---moving on along himself.

I got down on my hands and knees and crawled along a fence row until there was a break. I laid up on a bank and peaked into the field. He was 40 steps in front of me in full strut and I had a clear shot. As soon as he put his head up---I let loose. I never made a call. Got him at 4:50 PM!!

congrats..thats a nice bird..i myself cant stand silent birds...but they were like that last year..and i heard its the same this year..soon as you call they shut up..i got ambushes planned..hope mine work like yours...only i will end up falling asleep lol...congrats...bet thats a hard way to bag birds...

Way to sneak up on e' m. A good example of how knowing the terrain, the flock patterns, and good ol' stick-to-it-ness can put a bird in the bag. One of the more interesting hunts I' ve read about this season.
I know what you mean about quite toms. Two weeks ago in near Aliceville, AL the cold snap pretty much shut e' m up for the days we were out there.
