Henned-Up Gobblers
Hi, this is the first time I have posted anything on this board, however I read them all the time. I went hunting in Southern Iowa yesterday with my dad and he bagged his first gobbler. The gobbler came in slient surrounded by hens. Later in the day I tried to pull in a tom that was gobbling about 150 yards away when all of a sudden a hen came runnin' in clucking and stole the tom away from me. This happened to me several times and I realize that the gobblers are extremely outnumbered by the hens on this piece of private farm land. I have already tried to call aggressively to get the hen mad and have her come to me but this did not work. What else can I do besides trying to cut them off when they fly down from the roost? Any info is extremely appreciated as I am going out again on Monday and Tuesday.
Thanks and good look to all! :) |
RE: Henned-Up Gobblers
Try to be where the flock wants to go and put yourself in position to cut them off. Stay out as long as you are allowed to hunt, a lot of times some of the gobblers will be by themselves later in the morning and will respond readily to the call. What you tried by calling to the hens works sometimes also and will bring the whole flock in at times. Just keep at it, sooner or later you' ll get him! ;)

RE: Henned-Up Gobblers
Working him later in the morning maybe a better idea, also , do you use decoys and do you have a Jake decoy, on a safty note to keep in mind , a added Gobble from a shaker and a jake decoy can bring in them stubron Toms...BT
