RE: Owl Call
I use the Primos Hoot Flute as well.

RE: Owl Call
palmers hoot tube sounds great and isn't hard to use
|
RE: Owl Call
i prefer a reed owl call but the hoot flute is extremely easy to use
|
RE: Owl Call
Practice and learn to call with your mouth. It's really not that difficult, it's free, and it works.
|
RE: Owl Call
Man I'm gonna have to say the hoot flute sucks. It doesn't produce enough volume at all. A mediocre call with your natural voice is better than a perfect call from a hoot flute. Its cheap though, so I guess you get what you pay for.

RE: Owl Call
Like SS56 I'm not a big fan of the "boat whistle" types of calls either but they do work. They're just not loud enough. I don't want to coax a gobble I want to force one- "shock gobble". I'd pick up a reed style call like the Palmer and practice with it. Don't discount the use of your crow call in the pre-dawn hrs. either. A shrill-loud blast from your crow call on one of those "coulda heard a pin drop" mornings can really livin the woods up.It'salso a good way to change up that every day hum drum that seems to start up every day in April.

RE: Owl Call
I had a friend make this one for me:
![]() Its easy to use and looks good, to boot! |
RE: Owl Call
Dang barefoot, that call is a beauty. I think that I'm gonna order a Palmer cause I "know" that barefoot ain't gonna part with the one that he has:D.

RE: Owl Call
As superstrutter said, just practice with your mouth. I've been doing that the last couple years and made more turkeys shock gobble than when I used a owl hooter.

RE: Owl Call
Thanks, BigTimer. Yeah, Chris does good work. I can put you in touch with him if you want. I have three of his calls; the hooter, a matching grunter both made from bloodwood and a crow call made from palm.

RE: Owl Call
Just to pass on an update, I went to the NWTF National Convention last weekend and the guy who made the hooter I posted above placed 3rd in the callmaker's contest, Owl Hooter division.
This was his 3rd place entry. snakewood and blackwood with the mosaic pins in the aluminum band ![]() and this was his second entry that did not place, african blackwood with mosaic pins in the brass band. There were some great hooters up there! Hooters like these run around $50.00 to $75.00 depending on the wood, bands and pins, mostly. |
RE: Owl Call
I've used HS reed owl hooter and Primos wood hooter. In my experience unless your very close a turkey rarely reacts to any locator calls. They all work very well in the vids but....
