Took him on opening morning!

Closed out our one bird season this opening morning. I worked two eager gobblers in from some distance and they both strutted right up to my dekes. They gobbled probably 80 times in the half hour it took to get ' em in. :) They passed the spot I wanted to shoot ' em in full strut, side by side. I coulda doubled with one shot but that would be too much and we have a one bird limit! They began to shove my jake deke over and one broke away from the other and I clucked to get his head up out of strut. He popped it up half way and I literally took it off at 7 yards.
AWESOME hunt! I heard lots of gobbling, (all around me), spitting and drumming (a first for me) and saw twin strutters up real close![:-]
I bet heard six gobblers within a quarter mile radius.
Oh yea, 9 5/8" beard, 7/8" spurs--score 54 3/4. My first longbeard.:D

Good job!!!! I am going to have to work really hard this year, most of my land is under water and has flushed the birds out.Ë

Thanks folks, it was a real thrill for me. Sorry I forgot to put the weight down, it was 18 lbs. even. And Maytom, these are eastern in East Texas, I live in the " Big Thicket" pine curtain of Texas. It' s more like northern Florida here than where you just went.
Took a friend out this morning and called in two for him. His was 18.5 lbs. with a 10 1/4" beard and 1" spurs. Got to see more strutting and hear more gobbling and the spit and drum again. I' m taking one more buddy Sat. morning but that' ll be my season. If I don' t get to go again it' s been a memorable one!:)
