2 Q's
i was wondereing if any of you guys have ever saved your turkey wing i was wondereing how you preserve them because i think i would awesome if i could save the wings of my future first turkey
#2 is it ok that i dont have a camoflauge gun? |
RE: 2 Q's
For the first question i have heard of people saving the turkey wings so they could use them to simulate fly down in the mornings. i would think letting the wing dry out in borax would preserve it. and for the second i have killed plenty of turkeys with a non camo gun.

RE: 2 Q's
thanks also about the wing in borax do i soak the intire wing in borax?
|
RE: 2 Q's
they sell camo tape....and camo socks to cover your gun...
I had a sock for a few years, the tape leaves residue....the sock works pretty awesome, get a sock if not nothing... |

ORIGINAL: mossberghunter93 thanks also about the wing in borax do i soak the intire wing in borax? Once it dries, it will retain that shape. I use them for both simulating flydown, as well as use the wings on full strut decoys. Don't worry about the camo gun. The lack of movement is much more important!! If you're set on camo, I suggest having the gun dipped, or, purchasing a como shotgun. Tapes either do not work, or leave a residue. |
RE: 2 Q's
camo gun. no you dont need one
for the wing there are lots of things you can do. like said some use it for a flydown. since this will be your first you could use them in a simple wings and beard display. |
RE: 2 Q's
I'm not sure about the wing. But for the gun, it doesn't need to be camo. My gun right now is in Max-4, but I killed my first couple with a special edition Winchester 1300 that had a wierd color stock.. A bunch of bright ones. It's not needed though, my dad's gun right now isn't camo, he's killed his last 15ish turkeys with it.

RE: 2 Q's
thanks guys. so i just put the borax on the open flesh?
|
RE: 2 Q's
Camo on your gun isn't necessary, turkeys are more apt to pick up movement before your gun.
One thing you might consider with your first turkey wings is having a wingbone call made from them. I know there are guys who will do this for free if they can keep the other wing to make a call for themselves. |

RE: 2 Q's
I have used a Remington 870 for many years with no camoas stated above it's all in staying still, if your not moving they cant see you, a non camoed gun just looks like a black stick in the woods.
I saved my first wing, put boraxon the fleshy part (where it comes of the body) the next season I used it hunting. At fly down Ihit it against bushes and a tree to simulate a hen flying down and some times at the same time I will do a fly down cackle with a mouth call, works great! they think they have a hot one! |
RE: 2 Q's
Don't forget that wing. Save one as mentioned above and use the other to make a Wingbone call which is probably the oldest known turkey call known to man!
The gun - mine is not camo and will stay that ay for life. JW |
RE: 2 Q's
ok thanks
|
RE: 2 Q's
I use my cap to simulate fly down but I think a wing would be great.
|
RE: 2 Q's
use either borax or salt and put them between 2 pieces of card board and tack them together. you dont need a camo gun to kill a turkey. the only camo is used for is looks. my dad uses a 870 wood stock and kills turkey every year
