I've seen a tom walk away from a group of 3 jakes before. Smart thinkin or going to get backup.

Never seen a tom be scared of one jake, but i did see a big tom get is butt whooped by a group of jakes last year.

if that tom has been beat by a group of jakes before then even as the season progresses the tom will stillbe wary of even a single jake. Remember the main thing on his mind is getting some, not fighting all the time.

I've seen a tom run off by a group of jakes..
I've also had a couple of toms take one look at my jake decoy and run like h*** in the other direction.. |

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Swarming" on the streets
The same thing happens more often in the woods ;) |
RE: ANyone ever had a tom be scared by a jake?
jakes are kinda like a gang from the wrong side of town. they will team up and whoop up on an old tom running around by himself.

It can be a Gang War out there!
While scouting once I saw 9 jakes all in Strut as best they could completely encircle a lone hen. man she could go no where! And I also have absolutely no success using a Jake decoy in my spread when I use decoys. So I will not buy nor use a Jake standing at attention - However it can be the other way around with strutting Decoys both Tom or Jake! I do have some Jake fans as to me it is a visual que with the to[p center 4 tail feathers longer than the rest. But I don't ahve enogh data to say it works better or worse as of yet. AND I am going to experiment this year and set all 3 of my strutters in a group away from one lone hen on some Wary Ole Single gobbler just to see what will happen. JW |
RE: ANyone ever had a tom be scared by a jake?
if you are refering to your decoys as being the jake and hen. many of the decoys out there aren't that good, infact all market decoys will spook game at some point or another, that is why you see so many guides using taxidermied decoys. all i use now is taxidermied decoys because i got tired of getting up at the crack of dawn to have a cheap delta decoy freak out a hen and ruin my day.

I agree with the rest of the fella's. Last year I got a picture on my trail camera with 8 jakes in full strut. I found the gobblers on that property to be more wary than years before. I have had mixed luck with jake decoys. I also admit that i am not a decoy fanatic either. I learned to hunt in AL where they were only legalized a few years ago.

RE: ANyone ever had a tom be scared by a jake?
Two years ago I had a group of two hens and a jake decoy and had two toms come running from at least 1000yds when they heard my calling and then at about 70 yds they saw the jake decoy and wouldn't come in next morning I got rid of the jake and took one of them.
