any last minute advice?
 

well this is it. on saturday i will step into the turkey woods for the first time (with a gun anyway -- have done some scouting), and i was wondering what is some last minute advice that you would give for me to remember. i have done so much reading and asking questions that i feel like i have done it for years-- but i need to just get out there and do it. tell me somethings that you wished someone would have warned you about or reminded you about before your first trip. i will be calling for mayself and will be the only one hunting this property so keep that in mind. and hopefully with opening weekend coming up this will be the end of all my annoying questions that yall have answered a hundred times. hopfully i will make yall proud:D

Hey Click, I remember when I first started, I pretty well thought it was all over when the birds quit gobbling. Little did I know then was that the hunting is just getting good about the middle of the morning, gobbling or no gobbling. Just be persistent, do some glassing with the binocs, calling occasionally or with a shock call of some sort. Sooner or later it will pay off if you don' t get one right off the bat. Be patient,like Mo said it gets better when the gobblin stops, I know Iv' e learned that the hard way,Ive got the patients of a gnat so that is my vice.Good luck;)

Patience, Patience, Patience. I learned that one the hard way, I ruined the chances of both me and my buddy getting two great gobblers at once. Even if you think the birds have left the area. Keep calling and wait some more. Sit still and stay put. I thought the birds had left after coming within 10 yards of shooting range. But actually they circled around us and came in for a different view, and that is when dumb me decided to get up and cross the open field to ask my buddy if he wanted to try and circle infront of the birds (We forgot our radios that day, boy that will never happen again). As I started to cross the field he was saying something to me, to my delight it was a few choice words in regards to the 2 nice birds I just sent running out of the field, so as I stated above SIT STILL AND BE PATIENT!!!

Just remember when the turkeys humiliate you, we have all been there.:D Don' t take it personal, but learn from it. Turkey hunting is a life lesson in humility. They hardly ever are predictable, but when you guess right be very happy.

- Be patient! Wait for the tom to present a good shot.
- Take a deep breath. Calm your nerves. Settle down.
- Don' t forget " scratching" as a calling technique.
- Don' t overcall! Keep it to about every 20-25 mins.
- And finally, don' t be too disappointed if you don' t succeed. Take in the experience.

thanks guys for all the encouragement to be patient, i will think of yall when i start gettin a little antsy.

uncc-- i will be hunting in stokes county almost at the virgina line. it is about an hour drive from my house in winston salem but it will be worth it even if i just get to enjoy the morning. hope it stops raining tho because i have to cross a creek twice and it is almost knee deep when it hasn' t rained so i will prob. be changing socks after i get set up. good luck and may your lead fly straight!
