Choke/Ammo Combo for 870

What combos have worked well out of your 870? I'm going to try some new choke/ammo set-ups this winter to get ready for spring & am looking for some new ideas.

I started turkey hunting a few years ago with an old 870 my dad gave to me several years back. It had a hastings super full choke in it, and I always used federal mag shok flite control3" 2oz #6s in it, worked like a charm out to about forty fiveyards. The last couple seasons I've used a benelli supernova with a primos jellyhead, but I have an Indian Creek on the way for it. Load that sucker up with some hevi shot and its gonna be a turkey killing machine :D

I use a Primos Tightwad .660 constriction choke with 3 1/2" Federal #5's. Simply deadly.

Are you looking to shoot lead or heavier than lead loads?
Shooting heavier than leadI have gotten excellent results with Indian Creek (.665) and Hevi-13 3" #6's as well as Pure Gold (.670) and Winchester Xtended Range 3" #6's.

More than likely I'll be sticking with lead. Probably Federal with FlightControl wads or Winchester HV's.

With those loads you will probably end up on different ends of the choke size spectrum.
For instance with the Federal Flitecontrol shells I have always obtained better results with a more open choke (.690 all the way up to Imp. Cyl) that does not have "wad grabbers" integrated into the choke. Basically with the Flitecontrols you will want a choke that does not try to strip the wad away.
With the Winchester HV's I have gotten very nice results with a choke in the .650-.660 range.

For the Win HV loads... I would recomend the factory super full turkey choke... For the Fed F/C I would recomend the factory full;)

I use Nitro 4x5x7 ammo with a Rino choke Great patterns at 30 and 40 plus yards! Takes em down hard and fast.

You can also call up Carlson's and they can do a very good job with outfitting you with a choke...VERY knowledgable staff that works there and they are more than happy to help. My dad is a trapshooter and they have helped him over the years with chokes in his shotguns.

I personally use the Remington Hevi Shot choke paired with the Hevi Shot ammo for my 870...it just works well for me, so I stuck with it
