RE: Decoy delema
VT , I have only used the half strut jake once down in Florida, on a hunt at a non workable ranch/farm. We where setup along a swamp and a old pasture. A gobbler was gobblin down 150 yards from us and put this half strut strut out on the opposet side from the gobbler. I called the hens down the field past us and the Old Long beard Strutted his way down to the jake. He never got to him thow. I shot him and Competed my first Wild Turkey GrandSlam. It was a great hunt and we videoed the hunt aswell....BT [:-]

way to go BT!:D
I' ve never used one, but I don' t see why they wouldn' t make that ole gobbler jealous enough to come in for a fight. ;) |
RE: Decoy delema
Sorry I' ve been gone so long. I' ve been busy with my elk research (until November last year). I' ve also been on the road giving seminars at Deer Classics and Sport shows since early February. Two more shows and then I can hunt turkey here in MN, and then to MO for another turkey hunt.
As far as decoys go; I told Feather Flex to put a fan on a decoy several years ago; they came out with them, and several other companies did too. Most of them work. I' ve used both full strut and half strut jakes, and had good success, and bad success. The good success was when I placed the jake decoys in a shooting lane, with the hens off to one side. When toms (not jakes) come in they often go for the jake first (to exert dominance), and that' s when I shoot. The bad succes was when the toms or jakes wouldn' t come in, probably because there was something wrong with the setup, or the bird just didn' t feel like responding. There is no telling which birds will respond to what setup, or when. Commit a random act of kindness, and give credit to God. Rm. 10, 9 " Jesus is Lord" |
RE: Decoy delema
I used the " Bubba" half strut decoy twice. Both times I had birds spook from it. One was a jake, but the other was a big tom. Bubba stays at home now when I go.

Never used one. I' ve had success with the " breeding jake" decoy, though.
