Gulvas mouth calls.......
 

I just got a Gulvas 4runner call the other day, and it' s just like most of the guys on here said............difficult to use. I' ve been using it for about 4 or 5 days now and I' m getting pretty frustrated, especially since I can pop any of my other favorites in and " go to town" on them. I just wanted to ask any of the gulvas users on here if this call seems easy to " blow out" . It seems that right when my yelps are " rolling over" I' m pushing to much air and I end up squeeling instead of raspin' the second note of the yelp.......I don' t even want to talk about cuts and cackles...maybe it' s just be?
Any Gulvas users have any tips? I' m determined to learn these calls, I' ve heard to many good things about them. I have a triple on backorder from Midwest Turkey, hopefully it will be a little easier to figure out, then I can go back to the 4.

I have never used any Gulvas calls. So, I can not comment on them or help you at all in that department.

I am only replying because I can' t help but notice something here that doesn' t quite seem right to me. Maybe it' s just me, but I have a couple rules when it comes to the calls I carry and use. The one that applies here is...

" If it doesn' t work for me, it doesn' t go in my vest."

Now, I' m not saying that this call is junk or anything of the sort. All I am saying is that there is no way I would spend the time and effort you seem to be putting forth into learning a single mouth call that runs completely different from all the others in my arsenal. (Especially if the calls I already use work just fine!)

Let' s say you do get the hang of this new call. Are you going to be able to easily go back and forth between using the amount of air and tongue pressure it takes to use it versus the rest of your calls at the drop of a hat even while in the field? Are you going to develop that kind of " musle memory" ? (I' d wager that the answer is no as I' ve been there myself.)

It sounds to me as though you have been convinced by others that this call will be so sweet when used properly that you will just be able to throw away all others that you use. Well, I don' t believe in " magic calls" , but again, that' s just me. I' d rather take a half dozen calls into the woods that all run well for me than learn to lean on one single call.

Funny you should write this now...... I just got back from running a couple of errands, and gave the call a few more tries in my truck. I' m about 99% convinced that it just won' t work for me. I agree with everything you' ve said; being that my season doesn' t start till late april, I thought trying something other than the stuff I' ve been yelping on the last 7 seasons might be worth a try........but I guess my usual calls will be in my pocket this spring again; stick with what works, right? Oh well, win some lose some...

I just received my diaphrams from Denny himself last week. Denny told me that you have to " huff" air out straight from your diaphram just like a turkey. They operate different because they are built different, layered and rippled and no fancy cuts. Try saying the word HUCK instead of CHUCK. I' m still becoming proficient with them but the yelps are incredible and realistic when compared to real wild hens in my video library. I like the volume control on these diaphrams too. I like the soft talk that I can control a little easier. Denny told me that if I was having problems to give him a ring and he would personally get me on track. That' s why his # is on every product. Stand up service in my opinion. Give him a ring.

Well now... That' s good info to know. If you have someone to help like that you might as well go for it.

I' d still ditch them like a hot ' tater if I don' t " have it" in time for season though. But, that' s just me. LOL

I think you might be tryin too hard.You really don' t have to force it like you do so many other 4 reed calls.Try backin off on the presure you exert and see what happens.

Any info Denny gives you is as good as gold in my book.I' d take his word for it.
