??Do you hunt on private or public land??

Where does everybody do the bulk of their hunting, on public land or land owned by yourself or others? I do all my hunting on private land owned by my brother-in-law and his father and some neighboring properties of people I know. Sure works out great for me and I wholeheartedly appreciate their hospitality by letting me be a guest on their land. Can' t say enough about folks who are willing to let you hunt on them and expect nothing in return for it. People like that are gettting fewer and farther between in this day and age of leasing land out to hunt.

UP UNTIL LAST YEAR I DID MOST OF MY TURKEY HUNTING ON PUBLIC LAND. LAST SPRING I BOUGHT 80 ACRES IN NORTH CENTRAL ARKANSAS IN THE OZARKS. I' M 3/4 MILE FROM THE OZARK NATIONAL FOREST AND HAVE ACCESS THROUGH MY NEIGHBOR' S LAND TO THE FOREST SO I AM ABLE TO HUNT PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LAND ALL IN ONE AREA. BEFORE I HUNTED MOSTLY IN THE OUACHITA NATIONAL FOREST IN WEST CENTRAL ARK. IN MISSOURI I HUNT PRIVATE GROUND WITH SOME FRIENDS OF MINE NEAR STANBERRY NEAR WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED ALSO ON PRIVATE GROUND NORTH OF JEFF. CITY.

I hunt Private and Public land. The private land isn' t really private, anybody who wants to hunt there, can and will.

RE: ??Do you hunt on private or public land??

Turkey hunting has gotten very popular in recent yrs here in upstate NY. I have several spots to hunt. They are both private, and public. I have run into hunters on both. What I do is drive to my location of choice. If another hunter has beaten me there I move onto another spot. To me its difficult to hunt an area when you have other hunters there calling, and alot of times to the same Tom you are. I hate it when someone does it to me, but I feel just as bad if I' m trying to work the same bird another hunter is on alreadly. Unless I happen to meet up with that hunter and get his stratigy first I may consider hunting the same spot. But as we all know plans change with those crazy birds. So I prefer to leave it to them, and I' ll try it another day. I wish others would follow suit, and be just as considerate. I' ve had other hunters bump, spook, and turn a tom I' d been working, and it really urks me, because I' d not do that to them.

Mainly public land.
I have been granted permission to hunt a farm with many longbeards . The majority of it is posted to those that don' t ask. A small section where the toms hang out is heavily posted. The farmer has told me to hunt there
but he has two boys that LOVE to hunt turkeys. As far as I am concerned that is their territory. If I don' t kill a bird in the other farm spots I go to public areas including behind my house.

I' m usually on public ground, but we have a lot of it in this state. I hunt a few private places too. Just because it' s private ground doesn' t mean your gonna have a pushover hunt, they' re still turkeys.

Only on public land all over the USA.

RE: ??Do you hunt on private or public land??

Most of my hunting around here is on private land and it still isn' t that hard to get permission to hunt . There have been a lot of guides or outfitters going around offering to lease land for hunting so that has closed some of it ,but most of it is still open just for asking.

I probably hunt about half and half. I have two private spots to hunt, one is 100+ac. which I' m the only one that has permission to hunt.(of course last year someone shot one I was calling)The first year I had permission, I hunted it exclusively but after 5 or 6 weeks of a greenhorn hammering at them it got pretty tough. I know of 2 places on public land that don' t get a lot of pressure, especilly after the first couple of weeks, so I give the private spots a rest. I also have turkeys on my land but I can' t get over 100yds from my neighbors feeder.

RE: ??Do you hunt on private or public land??

I hunt on public land. The only problem I' ve had is with not always knowing where the other (if any) hunters are. Sometimes I feel relatively sure I' m alone, but I' ve had my share of bumps with other hunters.

What amazes me most are mushroom hunters in the later season who have absolutely NO clue that there may be turkey hunters in the area or have No clue that a turkey season even exists. I' ve run into folks who look at me like I' m some sort of terrorist running around in full camo and a gun in the middle of spring. LOL. I' ve also run into one who KNEW where I would be and STILL walked through the area. Also had the biggest tom I' ve ever seen spooked by shroom hunters while I was working him.

But I know where the birds roost, I know where they strut, and I always enjoy myself whether or not I' m getting whipped by the birds or people. :)

I start out on private land, and have a spot or two picked out on public land that isn' t the easiest to get to, so kind of hold that as a trump card.

Have hunted all private in the past, but this year I' m going to try a little public. This piece is cloce to my home and has never been open to turkey hunt on until this year.

I hunt mostly on the WMA' s here in Virginia. This year, however, I know a guy who knows a guy that will allow turkey hunting on his land (Yes! [8D] ), so I am excited about that!

But I don' t know about you folks and your states' WMA' s.... But, here in Virginia, on a Saturday morning early in the spring gobbler season?!?? I mean, I' m not talking trash or anything... But, it' s almost like DON' T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! It can get WAAAAAAAY to scary, if you know what I mean. [:o][:o][:o][:o]

I' d say that 80% of my hunting is done on Public land. This year I am hunting private the first couple of days. The public land on the opener is downright dangerous.

RE: ??Do you hunt on private or public land??

The majority of my hunting is on private, but I still enjoy slipping over into the public property from time to time. I don' t mind the pressure on the birds, but I hate how my anxiety goes up when I hunt public land.

We have a lease in Missouri & hunt public & some private ground here in Arkansas (crowded). I also swap a duck hunt here for a private land hunt in Kentucky. Wish I could find some private land to hunt here in my home state! :D

I hunt 150 acres of private by myself. I also hunt the public land around my house on days when I need to get home by noon. Apalachicola National Forest and Flint Rock WMA in NW Florida. Hey, If anyone else hunts these let me know.

Weekends/opening day - Private
Weekdays - Public

Thats the philosophy I usually stick to for obvious reasons.
