Jellyhead and Hevi 13

What a combo... I read all the hype on the Primos forum... So I gave it a try...

Awsome combo... 40 yards just tore a turkey target up!!! I don't shoot 10" circles... I just shot at turkey targets... So I cant tell you how many in a circle... I can say it's the best patterning turkey combo I've ever tryed...

The only thing I don't like is the fact the the Hevi13 loads are only traveling 1090fps... I don't like that:(

RE: Jellyhead and Hevi 13

I've tried several different loads with my Jellyhead, and Hevi 13's had by far the worst pattern. The Wingmaster HD's patterened the best. What gun are you shooting? They may work betterwith your particular gun.

I'm shoot a Remington 870 super mag... 23" barrel 3.5"

H'mm, I shoot a Rem. 870 SPS-T 3.5 thumbhole with a 23 inch barrel. Maybe I just had a bad day. I just could not get a good pattern with them beyond 30 yards.

superstrutter did you use the 3" or the 3.5" with 2-1/4ozand what size shot did you use? I was told by HeviSHot and Indian Creek Choke Tubes, to use the 3.5" with 2-1/4oz. #6, I have a Mossberg 835

My choke is the .665 and the load was 3.5" hevi 13 with 1 3/4oz of number 6's going 1090fps

Hey BHC what is the fps on that load you are talking about???

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!!

Mr.Longbeard has opened his eyes to technology and has seen the light! :D

And I remember you saying that you didn't believe that people were getting upwards of 200+ pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. Believe us now? Was that thud I heard earlier those Winchester #6's hitting the bottom of the garbage can?:DI don't care how much those Hevi-13's are, you won't shoot nothing else now. You think those Hevi-13's shoot good?I wish you could somehow find a Nitro to shoot.;)

Mr. Longbeard it seems they are also 1090fps. Here is a link: http://www.hevishot.com/images/panels/turkey/HeviShot%20Hevi13%20Sell%20Sheet.pdf

No, that's good. Lead needs a higher velocity because it's going to lose its "umph" quicker than Hevi-Shot. Hevi-shot is more dense than lead anddoesn't slow down as much as lead resulting in more down-range energy. If you could shoot both lead and Hevi-shot at a target 40 yards away, with the lead shell going 1300 fps and the Hevi-Shot going 1090 fps, the Hevi-Shot would get to the target first and have more energy when it gets there.

I shoot an 835 with a Jelly head and 3.5" 2 1/4 #6 Hevi 13 and had 16 pellets in the head or spine (bone!) on a H.S. Turkey head target at 40 yards. Flipped a bird right over at 35 yards in NE a month ago! I love my combo and wouldn't change it for nothing.

What I'd really like to do is some experimenting(spelling) and shoot some Hevi13 against my Win HV #5's at 40 yards and see which one has the better penitration... I just don't know what to use as a test material... I'm thinking a phone book... That way I could just count the number of pages that each shell penitrated...

Mr. Longbeard, to be honest with you you'd be wasting your money by doing so IMO. They're both basically the same pellet and will definitely kill at 40+ yards with ease. It's your money though. If you absolutely have to do it though I'd go buy a couple chickens at the grocery storeand wrap them with wet paper bags or something that may simulate feathers.

I patterned the 3.5" 5 shot. I don't believe it was 2 1/4 oz. It was the green hull. I've heard the old whiteshell and the gold shell are better, why?

If you think that is shocking, what do you think about Mr. Longbeard joining a club? What's this, private land hunting?

The whole reason guys use that 10" circle measurement as a standard is ebcause in theory a birds head can be anywhere inside that 10" circle when you actually crack the shot off with that constantly dancing head of theirs. :D
Its important to have as many pellets in a uniform pattern inside an imaginary 10" kill zone to fill any gaps if a bird moves from dead center as you fire.

I'm really impressed with my combo as well.......870 Supermag , ICSS .665 and the 3.5" 2 1/4oz #6's
even out of a cruddy barrel it put 29 pellets in the white "vital" areas of the head and neck alone on my turkey target at 40 yards. (spine, skull, vessels)
You couldn't squeeze a fart anywhere in between the pellets inside that 10" ring of death.

I'll be interested to see what it does off a bench with a clean barrel in the offseason. Might try some #5's too just for giggles and maybe some Nitros.

My choke is the .665 and the load was 3.5" hevi 13 with 1 3/4oz of number 6's going 1090fps
I shoot that exact same shell out of the 835 but with a Pure Gold .670.

I also have a Jellyhead for my 835, and using the Hevi-13 it was the second best performer of the five choke tubes I shot behind only the pure gold.

The Pure Gold put 207 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards.

The 390 Beretta, which is my duck gun, that I let Rebecca shoot for turkeys uses a Jellyhead also. We're putting Rem Premier Copper Plated #6 down her, and she's a great shooter out to 40 yards..... not too tight, not too open... but really about as tight a pattern with even plated lead as I've ever had shoot out of 3" gun.

superstrutter, if you are patterning the H13's that have the green hulls, then that's probably one reason you have had bad experience with them. Those green hulls are known to be the worst patterning shells. I have read where the bronze hulls, which are the newest load, are definitely worth shooting...especially with an Indian Creek choke! I have patterened the green hulls 2 or 3 years back and I was getting the same results as you did...only good out to 30 yards or so.

superstrutter 05-27-2008 05:10 PM

RE: Jellyhead and Hevi 13

Yeah, after I patterned them, I heard the green ones weren't as good as the others. I'm willing to try another one, but around here, the only ones I could find were the green ones. I couldn't even find anything but the green ones at Bass Pro. All these guys talking about Indian Creek chokes and hevi 13's has peaked my interest. I really do like the Jellyhead with my Rem. hevi shot mags, but as we all know, they don't make them anymore.

superstrutter, same here in New Jersey I can't find HeviShot13, 3.5", 2-1/4oz. #6, but I did find them at Cabela's but only in the box of 5 rounds

RE: Jellyhead and Hevi 13

I shoot an 835 with a 20" barrel and a jelly head. The 3.5" 2.25 oz #6 hevi-13s dropped a (public land, lol) bird for me in its tracks at a lazer measured 39 yards a week ago. Same combo dropped a CT longbeard for me at about 25-30 yards this past saturday. Out of all of the load/choke combos I've tried, this seems to be the best so far. 165 pellets in 10" @ 40 yards. I'm sure there's something out there that could do better, but I'm looking to kill gobblers, not 10" circles.
