AND...you can hunt deer with a .22, shoot a grizzly with a slingshot, or kill pheasants with a .410.....

my only point is, why handicap yourself uncecesarily?

use the RIGHT tool for the job, and take the second -guessing OUT of the equation....

I have been on bolth sides of this issue. had a mossy 500 with the plane jane 28" fixedmod barrel, missed plenty of shots... limits your range considerably. bought the 20" with the screw in chokes, gained about 20 yards and impoved the handeling of the gun considerably. hunt with what ya got but keep your options open, the 500 can be a versatile gun.

Shooting deer with a .22 is illegal in my state, as is hazing wildlife as you'd be doing with a sling shot to a grizz.

By the tone of the initial post, our poster isn't looking for a new barrel or a new choke.. he is looking to go hunting with what he's got.

If you want to spin hypotheticals moose... try this one out: I own a shovel and want to plant 12 tomato plants, and three dozen gladiola bulbs. Do I need to go buy a back-hoe?

I get where you all are coming from, I have killed many turkeys before the age of choke tubes. I'm just sayin, if you can afford a computer and internet access, you can afford a $90.00 barrel for your 500, and get the job done right.

I too can understand both sides of the issue. A little more clarification may have taken the guesswork out of your responses. I'm not an avid turkey hunter and don't spend a lot of time pursuing each year. Many of us believe that no matter what tool you've got, the perfect opportunity for a shot comes down to a lot of good fortune. So I guess it's like this, do I buy a screw driver or a screw gun for a small job. Both will do the job, but one will make your life a heck of a lot easier. Personal choice based on values and experience. I get it...

Have any of you guys ever had a fixed choke barrel fitted to accept screw-in chokes?

namari, a good gunsmith can fit your gun for choke tubes...think it runs about 50$ and that was with a factory choke i believe...

I would go with the federal flite controls in #6, i have seen these actually pattern better with a more open choke due to the wad design!
