your favorite turkey call?
I just started turkey hunting. My one friend took me last year and did all the calling. I want to get a couple calls so i can call them in incase he cant take me. What call should i get?
Friction? Mouth? |
RE: your favorite turkey call?
if your starting out never overlook the good ole box call. simple to use and can produce almost any sound you should need. next i would go with my personal fav, a knight and hale sla-tek pot call. mouth calls are great when you get them in close but most people need plenty of practice before becoming proficient with them.

My favorite is by far the Lohman Thunderdome. In my opinion, it makes the best sounding yelp of any call ive ever heard.

RE: your favorite turkey call?
as of now I'm using a Primos Power Cyrstal sounds really good, but I will be getting a custome call this summer, the guy that makes them is back-up on orders. My friend has one, and it sounds fantasic. Last week he used to call in my bird, everytime he used it, the bird called back

Box calls are very easy, slates are pretty easy, and diaphrams are by far the most difficult of the 3 overall to use IMO most of the time. I use box calls to locate birds, slates occassionally when a diaphram isnt working, sometimes just changing a call does the trick. I mainly us diaphrams allot after I know where the birds are. Dan Thumma of Grand C Calls makes some great custom stuff. His 4 hole slate is about the easiest slate call Ive ever used.

I'd go with a friction call or two first, they are pretty easy to learn. I have turkey hunted for years and still struggle with mouth calls, some people take to them pretty naturally so you shouldn't completely write them off. If I was only allowed one call I would pick a slate hands down. Although they make slate type calls with all kinds of different surfaces i still think a plain slate surfaced call, in a wood pot and wooden striker is the sweetest sounding call in the woods. I really like Primos calls, Knight & Hale, Quaker Boy and HS Strut are all pretty good too. Good luck!

RE: your favorite turkey call?
Every person likes something different... Take your budget, go get something that you can afford and practice with it... listen to the hens and mimick the tone, pitch. number of yelps, time between calls... everything they do...
Cause they make the Toms hot, and you want to too... |
RE: your favorite turkey call?
Geeze my favorite call.... I can't really pick just one...
I'd say that if I was only going to hunt with a few I'd pick a Sadler McGraw mouth call, a Woodhaven Legend Glass and probably just a cheap K&H Wet Willy Box. I've broken damn near every box call I've ever owned just from regular old hunting usage... the woodhaven real hen's paddle split last week. |
RE: your favorite turkey call?
I favorite is probably the Primos glass jackpot. I just got i this year and let me tell you, it sounds sweet. As for mouth calls i like the quaker boy calls.

RE: your favorite turkey call?
Since everyones calling out their favorites, I am using a Knight and HaleYella Hammer this year. I primariy use a slate, in high winds I use a Lynch's box call, Its a "Custom" call.

RE: your favorite turkey call?
I use mouth calls nearly all the time, sometimes I will bust out the trusty ol' box call but... Usually the mouth call.. I think right now I'm using the Primos double mouth call.. works good....

RE: your favorite turkey call?
well my favorite would have to be the illusion flat stoke box call, second would have to be either my k and h slate queen or my hs 360 gt, last saturady i was in 15 cm of snow and 60 km of wind, complete white out, gun was getting rust spots but the illusion never quit and was getting me gobbles from toms over 300 yards away

RE: your favorite turkey call?
i just listened to the lynch box call2 weeks ago, i and the turkeys loved the sound, i will be switching to that box call and handing down my "long spur" box call.
i like to use the "primos freak"for all my purring, it has a great sounding raspy purr, and can do some soft purrs with some easy to do tone variations to talk him into comming up to the blind. |
RE: your favorite turkey call?
Primos "Jackpot" w/slate (pot call)
Woodhaven Stinger Pro Series "CopperHead II" (diaphram) |
RE: your favorite turkey call?
Funny you ask ! While turkey hunting yesterday I got to thinking If I only could have a few calls what would they be ! We'll for me, it would have to be my Cody World Class glass call, a Quaker Boy "Old Boss Hen" diaphram, and my Woodhaven "Real Hen" box call. Cain't beat-em ! (IMO) Good Hunting ... SHOTARYE

RE: your favorite turkey call?
ThoughtI was the only guy who carried a Lohman Thunderdome! I've had that call in my nest for 12 yrs now, always thought it was the best production made slate call made.

I'm somewhat surprised that so many folks here are actually listing cheap, mass produced plastic sounding pot style calls as their favs! [:-]
My question is, have any of you that are mentioning these calls ever tried a quality custom call such as Wood Haven, Cody, American Friction, Bud&Betty ??? These calls take your calling authenticity to a whole new level. They produce TRUE turkey sounds that simply can't be reproduced on the cheap plastic mass produced calls. The ONLY time any of your birds have ever heard calls this realistic..... they were being made by a REAL HEN. :)To many of you that have not tried any calls of this caliber, do yourself a favor and check out one or two of them by next season and see and hear the difference for yourself. Good luck and good huntin' |

If they are calling in and killing birds year after year why spend the extra money and get a custom call?? And i wouldnt say that cody is too much of a custom call anymore......they sell it at my wal-mart |
