Setup of turkey decoys?
 

I have Turkey hunted for going on 3 years now and am just starting to use decoys. I need suggestions on how many decoys to use,how to set them up and etc.

I'll tell you what i do, there are many ways to do this. I use a jake and a jenny. I always keep the decoys within 10 - 15 yards from me. I try to figure out which direction the bird will come from. You do not want the decoys to be set up between you and the Tom. He will be looking right at you and likely bust you. If i get desperate, i add 2 silhouette hens to my set up and put the Jake mounting the other full body jenny. Read all the magazines you can get your hands on and try out different things. When I use decoys, I'll generaly use 2 hens and a jake. I put the jake the closest to me, and facing me.Most times that old boss gobbler will go nose to nose with that jake,giving you time to adjust your gun if needed,as he will be facing away from you and will have a tougher time picking up any movement you might make.

i never used decoys....my dad thinks we dont need em...but wouldnt it make sense to put the coys behind you and off to the opposite side of where the birds comin? coz if they see a hen they will come closer but sometimes hang up...rite outa range...if there behind you the bird will come closer and if he hangs up hes in range most of the time....just my 2 cents...but thats jsut my thinking

I dont use them anymore,unless im hunting fields,Ever since someone shot my Deke twice,and bounced bb's off my gun barrel.It's just to easy for someone to pick you off,if your not carefull.

We've got some brave people on this board using Jakes, I have had too many yahoos walk in on me that I don't think I would be sitting here if I had decoys in front of my setup. I have used them on occassion but usually don't.

I use a jake and two hens out in front of me about 15 yards. I try to position them as high as possible with the most view to approaching toms. One time I even stuck one on a log putting her about 3 feet more off the ground. It worked very well because two toms zig zagged through all those blow downs because they could see her and hear me and that was enough for them.
